I did this once, Doe's your stereo have an amp? If so go to radio shack and purchase a jack that plugs from your amp to your computer, The ends look like small mic plugs. It will hook into your sound card plugs on your computer. cost around $10.00 dollors or so.

Not sure what the cable is called, Just ask the person working at radio shack they will know what you need. Thats If you have a radio shack? are you from the USA or maybe UK. I lived In the UK for 5 yrs.

You may need RCA plugs for the back of your stereo, and "pin" plugs to plug into the sound card.

I call it a pin plug, but that may not be the most accurate term.  I believe you'll need the kind of plug that computer speakers use to plug into the sound card -- what - 8-10 mm in length?

                  Really?
There are two Radio Shacks in my town. They are still called Radio Shack here.

The Radio Shack website doesn't mention anything about a buy out or a name change. Where did you get this info?
