I know there's differences between Vista an XP, but you can have an XP user use Vista, and they won't be totally lost.

Vista is pleasing to the eye, graphically, and hey, a lot of people are driven by graphics -- if they weren't, we'd still be signing into bulletin boards on the Internet!   ;)

I do wonder however, why Microsoft made a jump from 1.5 GB of Minimum Harddrive space (WinXP) to 15 GB Minimum Harddrive space (Vista).......Windows XP---64 MB RAM minimum to operate & Vista 512 MB RAM minimum to operate.

That's an awfully big jump.  The first question that came to my mind was, What's in that extra 13 Gigabytes (approx), besides nice looks and User Account Control?  The Aero glass and UAC very much distinguish Vista from XP, but what else is there?  Some of the automated set-up processes seem nice, although I don't think Network Sharing Center is worth it....

I actually think I'll be pushing more for Linux after too long.  I'm learning Windows now because its the most common OS

I wish I had been into computers when bulletin boards were around.  I've read about bulletin boards.  It seems like it would have been an interesting era to live through. :)

I dug up my Vista disc a few weeks ago and installed it on a VPC. I use it quite regularly. No problems so far.

I completely agree that Vista is a resource hog.  (No offense to the pork industry.)

If you know just little bit about computers, and you look at minimum requirements on M$ site, regarding ANY Windows version, you can only laugh.
If you buy a computer, which just meets those specs, it'll never, ever work properly.
As for hard drive space, 1.5GB is laughable even for Win 98, not for XP. Get XP installed on even 15GB HD, and see how you're  gonna feel about it after 1 month of use.
I'm not even comment on M$ minimum specs for RAM amount, because it's simply a lie.

    I was imprecise.

I refer to Vista's hardware requirements, which resemble a gamer's computer, more than the average business computer's needs.

Look, you can't  demand from M$ to keep developing new OSes, and stay with Windows 3.1 hardware.
    Then...
In 1998, I bought top of the line Toshiba computer with Windows 98 on it.
233MHz Intel processor, 256MB of RAM, 6.4BG hard drive
    Cost? Almost $2,500!

Few months ago, I bought HP laptop with Vista on it.
2.0GHz dual core AMD, 2GB of RAM, 250GB HD
    Cost?
    $450!

Show me the logic of complainers, and I'm buying  a round for all people from this topic ;D

Do you truly think I am unaware of that?

I guess the minimum ideal RAM is 512MB, which isn't bad -- I thought it was higher.

WE know, that XP good minimum is 512MB of RAM.
M$ says, minimum is 64MB, so.....
