    Linux Random Questions
    « on: May 07, 2009, 11:19:52 AM »
okay since I dont have time at the moment but will before too long to look for answers to such questions.  How do you install linux apps?  Also, how do you update the kernal?  Is that like updateing linux its self and is it like the bios if something goes wrong you have to do a reinstall of it.

        hello??????

You're not paying us for a support contract. We volunteer our help for free, so its counterproductive to get impatient.

Depends on the version of linux how you install apps. Most install rpm's with rpm -i , but on CentOs/Redhat you can also use yum, on SuSE yast2, and on Solaris pkgadd. There's another command for debian too.

Rather than re-compiling the kernel I usually use yast2 to upgrade it with a pre-compiled rpm version, but years ago I used to have to edit Makefiles on SunOS to add kernel support for extra hardware, and then use cc to compile it, then finally copy a new /vmunix into place.

yeah, I googled it and it mentioned stuff like that.  But I dont really understand it.  The only thing is that its hard going from one OS to another so sorry about that.  I felt like a good amount of time had passed.  I kind of wish there was but funds are low.

One gets the impression that Squall would like hand-holding through the entire process of getting to grips with Linux in all its various flavours.  I presonally don't have time to volunteer for such a task, but I am happy to point in the direction of some useful resources.  Try:

                The Linux Documentation Project
                HowtoForge

for starters.  Also, one should consult the online documentation for each Linux distribution being studied.

Then you should (or must) wait until you do have time! We can't do your understanding for you.

if you don't want to "mess up" your system, you can download those Live CDs that can run on CD/DVD rom.

I seem to recall that these questions have been answered: installing Linux apps varies for each distro; read the distro's documentation for further details.  No one is going to reproduce that documentation here.  You need to read it, period.

Updating the kernel is usually as simple as running something like

                        apt-get update; apt-get upgrade

                        or

                        yum upgrade

depending on which package system your distro uses.  Unless you really REALLY know what you're doing (which you don't), don't attempt to install, recompile or configure your own version of the kernel.  That is not a simple thing to do. It's hard core...

I thought that you could get one program but the install would vary, didnt know it mentioned it.  I know that, I thought it was like doing an update for the whole system.  The book says that its red hat fedora linux 3,  I have Fedora 10 some were does that mean its a more recent copy of this?
