The nice thing about Linux is the control. The user has complete control and it has many preferences.

(Actually, thank goodness most of the larger distros do it for you after all these years!)

I imagine they're trying to hide the whole "mounting" metaphor, since some people get offended. "I have to WHAT to my drives? I don't have the energy for that!"
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
