found a program to close ports commonly used by worms
« on: May 15, 2009, 09:53:40 AM »
Since most of the viruses use known vulnerabilities in Windows services, which are enabled by default, and can’t be disabled via the operating system’s configuration, this tool is an excellent way of enhancing your PC Security.It also lets you solve the “Generic Host Process For win32 Services” problem easily. original article here http://techblissonline.com/generic-host-process-win32-services-fix/         download  http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-Worms-Doors-Cleaner-Download-107294.html

erm... yes they can.

Start->Run "services.msc"

All the describes services can be disabled here. However some of those (namely RPC locator) are required for some programs. For example, most .NET programs use Remote Procedure calls (even locally) and thus require the RPC locator to be running.

personally, I just leave all this to my hardware firewall.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Adding to BC's....open ports (by user's choice, or by some programs' needs are fine, as long, as they're made stealth by a firewall.

I think 2 of my ports are closed, but all the rest are stealthed...Let me find the test somewhere...

edit: Found the test! http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.grc.com%2Fx%2Fne.dll%3Fbh0bkyd2&ei=AkT4SeaKGonyMu3dmMAP&usg=AFQjCNGcEUI0ueElnD-6v2QlfKZdA721sw&sig2=JmJ5-pG6Zljfx4gJj8MmFw

Do every single test, post the logs.

For some wierd reason, when I tried to block inbound TCP on my CA Suite's firewall, the security center says that the firewall hasn't been installed, yet I can access it via the task bar (on the CA Suite icon).

As soon as it expires, I'm ditching it. It absolutely sucks, but I'm not wasting money.
