So I have a fairly decent PC (see specs below) but I am having some troubles with it now.

Whenever I am running a game, it start out running smooth and then suddenly goes jumpy and a random point.

This is occurring in games that I used to play on maximum settings with no problem (Bioshock) and in new games that I play on the minimum settings (Call of Duty: World at War).  Even when I changed the settings (Bioshock) from the highest to the absolute lowest, this problem still occurs.

*A few notes-  I recently had to restore my computer due to a start up problem.  After I restored it, I updated it with the most recent video card drivers.  When that didn't work, I downloaded the previous video card drivers and that had no effect either.  It was exactly the same.

    Here are my specs:

Toshiba P105-s9722 (I didn't write this description, so sorry if it sounds corny)

    * Powerful multimedia, gaming PC with 17-inch LCD; 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor (4 MB L2 cache)
    * Gigantic 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of RAM (4 GB max), dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner
    * Four USB 2.0, one FireWire, one S-Video, one DVI-D, one PCMCIA, one Expresscard 54/34, multi-format memory card reader
    * Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 graphics card with 256 MB of dedicated RAM; tri-mode 802.11a/b/g wireless connectivity; Bluetooth
    * Windows XP Professional Edition, SP2--Windows Vista capable and Windows Vista Premium ready

I appreciate any help and will gladly fall to my knees and worship anyone who can give me a fix to this solution.

first of all grab the hijack this program and run it

    download hijack this here: http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

post log and have evilfantasy, broni or other malware specialist of this forum examine it to see if your pc is in good health. That is where I would start. Just a check, your pc may be fine but good to know it's not sick if it isn't ...right?

Ok, so here is my observation.  Like I said, when I first play, it is very smooth, then after a few minutes of play, it gets jumpy (I was playing on maximum settings too).  Well, whenever I would alt-tab it to check on the temperatures, and I would go back to the game, it would be smooth again for a few minutes.  It only worked when I spent at least a minute or two out of the game and then went back in (if I alt-tab and then go immediately back in, it didn't work).

I feel like this could be a clue.

Oh boy. This is hot, very hot, and there is something really wrong with your laptop.
        It's not even a game.
When idle, CPU temps read 61C. It's already warm.
Then, you have 89C-96C, when the game starts, and 94C-99C later.
Your processor max temps are listed at 100C.
You're getting this close to melting your CPU.
Some damage might have already happened.

First of all, no more games for now.
Laptops are not really designed for gaming, to start with.
Is the laptop still under warranty?

Well to be honest, that temperature is after my computer has been on for for 2 days.  Nope, not under warranty.

The funny thing about this is that your particular model is considered a somewhat high-end gaming laptop.  Personally, I can't fathom using a laptop for gaming, but that's beside the point.  Although you could use a bit more RAM, you should be able to play World At War on max settings without any issues.  However, regardless, you're obviously having some issues.  And some serious ones at that...

These temperatures are some of the worst I've seen for a computer.  I can't say whether or not your laptop has suffered any permanent damage, but it's *censored* near close.  Boiling point for water is 212F, or 100C.  In your test results, you're topping out at 99C.  That's almost boiling!  I don't know what in the world is causing this, but you need to do something about it ASAP.

How long have you had the computer?  And like Broni asked, is it still under warranty?  You've got yourself a pricey little machine there, so for your sake, I certainly hope so.  Make sure your laptop is adequately ventilated.  Cleaning out dust with a can of compressed air might help, but I've never seen dust cause such high temperatures.  Adding a fan or two could also help, but unfortunately, that's rarely feasable on a laptop because they're so small.  The same probably goes for thermal paste (although I've never tried it on a laptop, so I don't know for sure).

Really, your best bet is to use the warranty (if there is one) to its fullest extent.  All I can really do is wish you luck; Toshiba has notoriously bad customer service.  But I'm not sure what other options there are, aside from replacing half of the parts and hoping it works.  All I know is that your idle temperatures are twice as hot as my computer's temperatures at full capacity.

Oops, you posted while I was in the middle of writing my post...so, no warranty, eh?  That's really unfortunate, but maybe someone on here will have some alternative ideas.  And I'm a bit curious to know why you would leave your computer on for two days.  Is this something you normally do?  I don't think it would cause such high temperatures, but leaving a computer on for extended periods of time like that can often cause problems.  Just for the heck of it, you should try running the test again after your computer has been off for several hours and has had a chance to cool down.  Then use your computer for about 30-40 minutes and run the test.

First of all, thanks to CBMatt, and Broni for the temperature help.  I feel pretty convinced that it is the issue.

I turned off my rig for about 2 hours and the temperatures had decreased significantly.  I was running my computer for about 15 minutes on a game and then the temps shot up again.  *I will note that after my computer had time to cool down, I was able to play the game for much, much longer.

-This computer has not been in use for about 6-7 months prior to me using it, so it is VERY possible that there is a big accumulation of dust inside.  I feel like the computer has always ran pretty hot.

So my course of action is this: going to clean it out with compressed air, and I am going to buy one of those cooling pads with the two exterior additional fans.  It is just like a band-aid solution, but it is the only option I can think of.  I'm not sure what thermal paste is, but I'll look it up.

I know it is hard to fathom why anyone would want a laptop for a gaming rig, but I work in international business and so I am constantly required to travel from country to country so a big rig is not feasible for me.  As to why would I leave my computer on for two days, well that is probably because my computer experience level is still pretty low and out of naivety, I did not know it would cause any problems.  Lesson learned.

So that is what I am going to do, and if any of you have any additional tips on how to deal with the heat issue (which I am convinced that is what it is) let me know.

I will post the results if I am able to cool it down more.

p.s. thanks again to everyone for taking your time to help me out.  You are all very good people to offer a helping hand.  It is much appreciated.

Actually, it isn't naive to think  a laptop should run without issues for several days- it should. Mine, for example, has been on constant for a month and a half.

My first suspicion would be dust- next would be to make sure all the fans are working.

The cooling pad solution would at least give you a working machine while you try to find the core cause.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

I suppose computers these days are able to operate a lot more efficiently for longer periods of time, but I've only encountered slow laggy machines from people who do this.  You say your computer has been on for over a month...do you let it go into Sleep Mode or Hibernation when you sleep?  If so, that's almost as good as shutting it off.  If not, and it has been constantly running this whole time, I would imagine it must need a break!  Hardware gradually wears out with use, and if it's being put to work for this long without a break, it's feasible to expect it to wear out sooner than it usually might.  Of course, if you constantly shut down, your hard drive is more likely to wear out faster.  So, I guess it's important to find a good middle ground.  Anyway...

In a way, I partially suspect there may be something wrong with your graphics card.  Out of all of the components, it is running the hottest.  To be honest, I don't have a lot of experience with graphics cards or with laptop hardware, but I wouldn't be surprised if an upgrade would help, especially if the card has a built-in fan.  But I'm not sure if this is available for laptops, considering their size.

-This computer has not been in use for about 6-7 months prior to me using it, so it is VERY possible that there is a big accumulation of dust inside.  I feel like the computer has always ran pretty hot.
Depending on where you live, that amount of time could allow a lot dust to get in.  I live in somewhat of a farm community where it is constantly dusty.  If a computer were left unattended that long here, it would be caked.  You also don't know if any bugs might have turned it into their home.  Also, going so long without use can actually cause problems as well.  I don't know if it could cause these extreme temperatures, but computers often don't function properly if they've gone without use for a long time.

So my course of action is this: going to clean it out with compressed air, and I am going to buy one of those cooling pads with the two exterior additional fans.  It is just like a band-aid solution, but it is the only option I can think of.  I'm not sure what thermal paste is, but I'll look it up.
A cooling pad is actually a pretty good idea.  Like BC said, if you thoroughly clean it out and use a pad, it should allow your laptop to function without as many problems.  But you're right, it's not really an actual fix.  Unfortunately, fully fixing the problem might not be an easy task, but at least there are things you can do.  As for the thermal paste...people normally use it when overclocking their systems, but it could help somewhat.  Basically, it helps dissipate heat so components don't get too overheated.  You can get a small tube of ceramic paste for fairly cheap, and as long as it's applied properly to the CPU and heatsink, it might help.  Just make sure it's ceramic (like this one) or sylicone; metallic paste isn't suggested for beginners, as it can be electrically conductive.

It's not necessarily a problem; I'm just a bit of a stickler when it comes to this sort of thing and I have only seen bad things happen to computers that have been left on for extended periods of time.

            It doesn't matter.
When you start the computer, the processor heats up in a matter of seconds. It reaches some temperature (good, or bad one), and if you don't touch the computer, it should stay at the same temperature, no matter, if it's on for 10 minutes, or 10 days.
