Join our team!
« on: June 03, 2009, 02:14:19 AM »
The team's progress has been excellent so far, and I'm very happy to be folding with you ... yadda yadda.

Anyway, I did some quick calculations this morning, and I see we have just over 26000 forum members - great!
Check the folding team ... 20 active members, 34 total.
Less than one in a thousand members are folding.
I know most forum members aren't active, but even say half of them aren't, that's still less than one in five hundred.

We can do better!
Get the word out guys and gals, as a team currently we're doing great but we need more firepower to push on.

Some of you may think I'm stupid or out of line doing this, but I don't really care - sure, it's not "my" team or my website, but I can think of no better cause than folding@home, especially when it requires almost no effort on anyone's part to get it going.  No matter what team number or username you fold under, it's all good to me.

So ... who's with me?  I'm doing my best to keep my performance up but the heat makes things difficult.  I can imagine the same goes for most of us, which is why I think the way to go is more members, not just current members folding more.

I'm with you!  ;D

my laptop is still chugging along with those units. I keep forgetting to restart it or resume it when I have to pause it for whatever reason, but in general it gets a good 6 1/2 out of 7 days a week folding.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Good to hear BC ;)
I was interrupted just after I posted the above post by a delivery - a new case for my main machine, which I'll have to (no, really!) install this weekend along with my new board as it's currently dominating the living room (in its box, I can't even get it up the stairs, it's too heavy/awkward).  That should help keep my main rig folding for more of the time.
I'm also collecting a low-end folding graphics card for my server soon, I saw it for a good price and jumped on it.  That should turn in a good amount of work, 24/7.

          Just a quick update/bump.
I think I've maxed out my effective crunching power now.  Any more purchases will have to stop because I need to start saving some money.
My 8800GT seems to have lost its ability to overclock, which has reduced my output considerably.
Also in autumn I'm hopefully leaving the country, so I think I may have to stop folding then (much as it hurts me, I can't justify leaving my machines on at home for no apparent reason).  My friend's computer and the family PC should still be crunching, but overall I think their output would come to one unit every few weeks.

In the meantime, I'll be folding as much as I can, I've sorted out my heat issues and will be folding as much as possible without spending any more money.  Even my server has a graphics card in it now, heh.

The team seems to have lost some momentum lately - grab a friend, introduce them to the fold, and let's push into the top 1000!

          Fold on!

The OS isn't too important, no, there are clients for most OSes including Windows 7 as you obviously have found out.

Exactly.  Whatever you can fold with makes a difference, as long as it can complete the units on time of course which any of the machines listed in your specs can do.

For the graphical client, you'll have to add it to the startup folder.
The console client is easier, as it can be set to run invisibly as a service - I have mine automatically start, and automatically restart if for some reason it fails to start straight away.

Your PC is fine, for most of the tasks you perform.  It is just not as efficient at processing work units as the dual-core processor based computers, quad-core processor based computers, and higher-end graphics processing units (video cards) which other members of the team have.

That's why I menitioned, in the other thread, that your computer is fine for most of what you do, but that if you wanted to increase your Folding@Home output, you'd have to upgrade the computer.

What folding client you are using and your settings make a difference.  You can select to take on small, medium, or big files, advanced scientific something-or-other (I forget what it says), etc.  The client I run that works off of the graphics card usually takes < 8 hours to finish a WU, where as my SMP clients using the CPU take 24 hours.

Any way you slice it, it takes time.  I'm sure that if you don't let your computer fold for a good portion of the day, you will run into problems making the deadlines.  I just let it run.  I'm used to leaving my computer on overnight for downloading torrents, so if I can help battle some diseases at the same time, why not?  ;)

                            Taken off GPU client guide.
"If you own a NVIDIA card, it must be compatible with CUDA, so the 8 series and above is compatible.  The GeForce series 7 and older is not compatible due to a lack of unified shaders. "

Sorry mate, looks like a no-go on that 6150.  The GPU client can work pretty well, mine is getting 1%/min right now, where as the SMP client is getting 1%/10min.  The WU's amount to different points, of course, but I like to see the quick progress anyway  ;)
If you have a PS3, I hear they do really well when running F@H.  If not, just keep plugging along to fight the good fight.  Besides, I'd say consistency is better than quick gains.  Take a look at those slackers at the top of boards resting on their laurels.  Why, I can catch up to ComputerHope in 9 months now...  8)

Yes, the Playstation 3 can also run F@H.  I don't have one, personally, but I've heard they do quite well.  They aren't as flexible as PC's in what *kinds* of projects they can do, but what they can do, they do well.

I would fold but my PC is so slow and folding makes it pretty much unusable. I will fold when I get a new PC or a PS3. If I get a new PC I will dedicate my current server to Folding.

just for a few folding points
i think it can damage hdd
because when you shutdown with the powerswitch it gives to hdd a heads up
                                to park the head

Any way you slice it, it takes time.  I'm sure that if you don't let your computer fold for a good portion of the day, you will run into problems making the deadlines.  I just let it run.  I'm used to leaving my computer on overnight for downloading torrents, so if I can help battle some diseases at the same time, why not?  ;)
i cant do any F@H while doing anything else
                                    especally C compileing
if i tried to do F@H while C compileing
i would have a thermal shutdown
and lose F@H progress and compiling progress at the same time
and that would get me mad

                                      first did you try CTL+ALT+DEL
are you sure its frozen completely
i still wouldnt recomend turning the wall switch off
unnless you are confortable getting a new hdd soon
also you may have a hardware or corrupted software if it freezes often
                                      have you ran memtest latly?

and lose F@H progress and compiling progress at the same time
and that would get me mad
You have some major hardware issues if you get a thermal shutdown when you load up your processor.
I really think you should address that problem, if F@H can do it then so will most intensive programs.  I find F@H to be less intensive on my CPU and graphics card than many other tasks.

I just installed the new nVIDIA Geforce 9400 GT Graphics card, how do I use it to start folding ? I am downloading CUDA now, so do I delete Folding@Home and reinstall it to change the processing?
                                          Thanks

You don't need any of the CUDA packages, they're mainly for developers.
Just grab the latest drivers from the Nvidia site and install them, then download and install the F@H GPU client.
The console client is better than the system tray one, as the viewer in the system tray client can cause major slowdowns.
You'll have to fold for a large amount of time each day with a 9400GT to make any deadlines, I fold with a 9500GT which is around twice as fast and it completes most small/medium units in around 12 hours, larger ones obviously take much longer.  This isn't a long time comapred to the standard CPU client, however the deadlines on the GPU units are usually around 3 days.

Links - Nvidia drivers for Vista 32-bit (which I'm assuming you're using, if I'm wrong don't use them).
F@H GPU client and setup guide.

Hope this helps, and as always if you have any problems feel free to ask.
                                          Fold on!

There's no need to delete the old client, no.
By the way, it may be helpful if you could take some time to fill out the computer specs section in your profile.  That way everyone can see what you're using to fold on, and maybe suggest ways to improve.  Additionally, if you ever have any computer problems, filling out that section saves people having to ask each time what your specs are.

If you follow the guide that Calum linked to, you will end up with both your CPU client and a GPU client.  There is no need to delete the CPU folding because you can still run the CPU client while the GPU client is running.

I tried to follow all the instructions for the client, but I don't think it is running? Should this client show up in program files ?

First step of the "Console installation guide" tells you where to put the program.  It is not to be installed in the programs folder, because that may cause issues.  The guide really takes a step-by-step approach.  It's a pain to follow, but it's really the best way to do it.  There are lots of places you can go wrong.

I joined a while back, didn't know that Computerhope started a team I was user 0 team 0 default. Jumped over a while back and now generating points for computerhope rather then default. To bad my points that I did, did not move over :(

I have 1 machine running dedicated to folding@home. Its not utilizing all CPU maybe because I got the command prompt version rather then the full client.. I found the command version to run faster then the client. Also what I am finding weird is that folding 500,000 work loads seems to take about the same time as 1,500,000 work units? Oh well might be just me considering I don't normally check on the computer and I lose track of time. its a computer just sitting in the corner. ;D

Oh and hopefully I get into the top 20, thats my goal right now.. I don't think I will be able to catch up to the top 10.. unless the people suddenly stop.

my pc seems to be folding at about 10 to 15 times the speed it was , would this be because i cleaned the

tower out after about 3 1/2 years  ;D , i'm on a 2,500 unit and at this speed it should take 3 days , before it

would have taken 3 weeks  :)

it amazed me how many dead spiders were in the tower  and dust as well  ::)

                                                  That I scary.

I am loving Folding. Explaining it to people and watching my and the teams stats change is strangely fun.

With 50 people I am surprised that only about 13 people are actively folding. My core i5 and 9800GTX+ are chugging away every night and when I have classes. Even now I have 3 instenses of the CPU version going.

Agreed, think it's not only fun but productive at the same time. I believe that only 13 are active because a lot of the users have slower computers and maybe don't find it as fun since it takes a great length of time to complete a unit, that or maybe like most other things the newness (is that a word) of it wears off. :)

I can understand if you have a slow computer that it may take time to see results so you would louse interest, but even slow computers can make a difference when trying to rank higher than other people. Last night I set up a client on an oooooooooooold computer. It was an xp machine that got a nasty virus and would not boot. I did not really need anything on it so I put Linux on it however I never use it so now it will be chugging away even if my main system is down. It is a really slow machine. I punched some numbers and it takes ~32min. to do 1% of the work. It is probably at 15% right now after a hole nights work. I'm at school right now so my main system is going at it too. I plan on setting up my old computer (a descent single core) soon so I will add that to my pot. Some day I will surpass you all. Maniacal laughter!!!!!

not if I surpass all of them first!! hehehe.
I only have the system listed in my specs (1.73 GHz single core) and will not stop folding (unless playing AOE 3, or running anti-malware scans ;D).  Every little counts.  Also I have a personal reason for folding: my grandmother died of cancer (not sure which one) and I want to be helpful toward solving this problem.
