i've got a toshiba laptop thats about 9 years old it has all of my pics on. its running windows xp. recently when i went to turn it on there was a really loud banging noise from just south of the disk thing. it would then go to an error screen where it said a cable was unplugged and that i need to insert a disk.

It's difficult to know where to start trying to decode your post.  What does "just south of the disk thing." mean ???   What's a "disk thing" ???

We cannot see your display so need you to tell us exactly what appears on the display.

Any noise is not a good sign.  It could be caused by a faulty fan but who knows?  The only hardware info you give is that it's a Toshiba laptop, no model type or description of any kind.

Please read this advice.
