Author Topic: Windows XP will not restore to an earlier date (Read 23108 times)

Thank you for taking the time to review my post. I am new to this forum and have so far found it quite informative.

My current problem is I have a laptop with Windows XP. I have tried several times to restore it to an earlier date only to get a message

Your computer cannot be restored to
Date Requested

No changes have been made to your computer

To choose another restore point, restart System Restore

To say the least I've tried other dates and have failed with the same message appearing.

My system has a Total Size: 37.2 GB with 26.2 GB FREE

The disk space to use: Is set at the max 12% (4577 MB)

There should be more than enough space available I would think to do a System Restore

Have you tried to do system restore in sage mode? If not try it, it will usually work.

I have attempted in safe mode and failed there. I will try again though.

In regards to my system :

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Mprocessor 1.60GHz

Repair:
Click Start, Search and look for SR.INF. It should be in "C:\WINDOWS\inf"
RightClick on it, then LeftClick it, select "Install"
Follow the prompts, Reboot and System Restore will be ready to use.

If he does this he loses all restore points...i don't think this should be suggested yet at this point in time...

Absolutely.
If anything, if System Restore doesn't work from Safe Mode either, he can try to repair it: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairsr.htm

I've attempted to restore in Safe Mode and have failed Miserably again. I've also done the search for SR.INF. and come up empty handed on that front as well.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:

Click the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Download it on working computer. Use USB stick to move it to the bad computer.

Norton doesn't like system restore. In order to complete a system restore you have to turn off protection for Norton products. You don't have to turn off Norton - just the protection for Norton products.

For one DLoad and install Process Explorer and see what it eats for lunch...

Then if you are really adventurous ...try uninstalling it.

well... for one you have twice as many processes as I do, and I have 5 different apps open right now...

Although on the other hand, you are using iTunes... which installs several background services as well.

Try sorting it by processor time, and watch which ones are at the top for a while.

Also why do you have sqlserver?

I downloaded System Look onto another computer then installed it on my lap top. Unfortunately it came up empty

I also attempted turning off Norton by following the directions from the link that had been listed and that attempt was Futile as well.

It looks like SR.INF is missing, and you have some system files issues.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

Clicked on start

Clicked on run and typed in:

sfc / scannow

Then clicked OK

A blank black screen popped up for less than a second

No info or anything
