When I shut my computer off it turns itself back on.
« on: June 09, 2009, 11:31:36 PM »
My friend's computer (I'm house sitting for her) has a problem.  She is using Windows Vista.  The problem she is having (and now me since Im staying here for the next two weeks) is that her computer turns itself back on after being shut down. If you do not unplug the computer after it turns off it just turns back on. There does not seem to be any other problem. This is the only time it turns itself back on. If you plug it back in it does not turn back on automaticlly. What should I check? Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

When you power on the computer from being totally off, hit one of these keys:

F1, F2, or delete

This will let you enter CMOS (some basic options), where you may be able to change some power options.  If you can, get to where the "POWER" options are and see if "Wake on LAN from S5" is Enabled...If it is enabled, highlight it, press enter and change the setting to "disable".

If there is another setting, "wake system from S5", highlight it, press enter and change the setting to "disable"....Once you are done, be sure to save your changes by hitting the F10 key, or going to the EXIT options..

If the problem goes away after adjusting these settings, then problem fixed!

I had a problem when a computer would not completely turn off.  It turned
out to be nothing more than a sticking on-off button.  Try shifting the computer case
a little by pushing on a upper corner during the shut down cycle.
