I have a Dimension 3000 bought in 2005. If I go to Dell drivers and downloads and download a driver. Does it automatically remove the old drive installation and then install it again?

    No.
Most times you need to locate the DLoaded file and double-click it for it to install itself...

What is the driver for ? ?
As i said you can normally just find the driver file you DLoaded and double click it ...
The installation will proceed from there.

My DVD driver. It is a NEC DVD+-RW ND-3530A. My problem is, if I right click on a disk to creat a folder it tells me. "Unable to create the folder "New Folder" Access is Denied.

CD/DVD drives have not needed drivers installed since WinME...
Are you trying to burn something to the DVD ? ?
A burned CD/DVD that has a project burned to it will not allow you to create a new folder...
Perhaps this is the issue here.

I have always stored my photos, word documents, ect. on DVD disks since I bought the PC. Now all of a sudden I can't put a photo or word document on my disks.

            Oooops...:)

            One of these may help:
            1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
            or...
            2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
            Restart computer.
            or...
            3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
            Accept registry merge.
            Restart computer.
            or...
            4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
            You'll see two items:
            - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
            - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

              Broni,

I did item one and two.
Item three did not have cdgone.reg.
              Item four was also done.

I still can't open a new folder on a empty dvd disk. If I try to change a word document on an existing disk and try to save, it goes to the save as window and tells me this file is read only. If I try to change the name and file it with save as, it tells me:
"Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged".

In that case, most likely, the drive needs to be replaced.

That is- assuming the built-in burning facility hasn't somehow been fudged.

I did I search but I couldn't find any info on re-registering it's DLL's, if that is even the way they work.

What burning app are you using ? ?
This could very well be a file management issue.
A blank CD/DVD needs to have a name/title for the burn project itself before you create a new folder i believe...

                Broni,

I went to Dell PC Checkup and run the check. It came back with this message:

2D/3D Video Fixed Transformation and Lighting Test.
The scan failed with the following error. No3DSupport - The
test cannot find Direct3D support from the video driver.
Possible Drive Problem - the test  cannot complete due to a
possible driver problem Rerun the scan, and if it fails again
use the button to contact Dell.

                Patio,

I am running Sonic DLA Version 4.95.
I understand your statement about titling the disk before making a file. Some of my disks I have been storing on for a long time.

This topics seems to have hit a dead end. Since  we all talked last I bought a external hard drive and have given up on storing on DVD's. I still have the problem and at some point in the future I will take the PC to Geek Squad and tell them to check the DVD hard

It's hard to recommend optical drive brand. They simply fail after a while.
                        Personally, I prefer LG.
