    Router keeps dropping my connection
    « on: June 24, 2009, 04:53:23 PM »
Hello all, I've posted once on this forum inquiring about how to set up a password for my wireless router a few days ago. I am a novice, so I thought it would be a hard and tedious process but of course it wasn't. Anyway, I set up my Netgear WPN824v2 router with my dsl modem. I am able to use the internet for about an hour, then my connection drops. What I've been doing is rebooting my comp and starting all over again and it just keeps happening. It's really annoying and I was wondering if anyone here knew what the problem was.
There might have been a post like this in the past on this forum so I apologize if this has already been discussed. Thank you for any help

What OS and service packs do you have installed?

No problem at all.  We all start somewhere :)

To determine which service pack you are using just hold down the Windows button and hit the Pause/Break button.
A window will pop up showing what service pack is installed.

Okay I did that, but I cannot locate anything about Service Packs. It just shows generic information about my computer

Are you using a wireless connection from computer to router?  Have you tried a cable connection to see how it works, compared to wireless?

            That's okay :)

Is your wireless adapter enabled in the laptops bios?
Is the switch on the laptop enabled for the wireless?
Did you enable the wireless in the routers setup?

That's okay, I just remembered this part.  I think I need another coffee.

How far away from the router are you working?
How many walls between the laptop and the router?

Well I think I failed to mention this, and I am terribly sorry...I use my laptop in the living room which is maybe 10-13 yards from where my desktop is. The router is hooked up to the desktop via the dsl modem. I use my laptop for work and I use my desktop to surf the net. While I use my desktop (which is located in my bedroom), the internet connection stays on for an hour, then it drops. The internet connection in my laptop works perfectly fine and never drops.

So it's the desktop that we're trouble shooting?  Or is it the laptop?

It's the desktop. Sorry it's taken me forever to reply.
