Win 98SE is DOS 6.2....not DOS 7.1

Win 98SE is DOS 6.2....not DOS 7.1.

I'd like to query that.  I have a hazy recollection of what was named Dos 7.1  being distributed on-line having been extracted from Windows 98se by Wengier Wu and his team at the China Dos Union.  It's still available for download but from a different source.

The following quote is from this site and clearly mentions Win 95 and Win 98 and Dos 7.0

So, is the underlying Dos version in Win 98se version 6.2 or 7.0 or were versions of 98se available with both Dos versions.  Would MS have used Dos 6.2 in Win 98se when Dos 7.0 was already in use with Win 95?

DOS 6.0 and 6.2 & 6.22 exist standalone. But they cannot possibly be the same version as that included in windows 95/98 because MSDOS.SYS is a binary system file changed to a text configuration file. It  stands to reason that not only is this a major change requiring a change in version number but also that windows 95 was released over a year after DOS 6.22 which leads us to conclude that windows 95 comes with DOS 7.0, Windows 98 with 7.1 and windows ME with 7.2.

Perhaps you could purchase a legal copy from someone on eBay.

Some people on eBay post a picture of a product and just send you a copy.
And any copy of DOS is legal as long as you own a Windows OS.

Here's an easier solution.  Install Windows 98SE.  Then install TweakUI, it can be found on the 98SE disk, or you can search Microsofts site for it.

This utility installs in your Control Panel. After installing it you go to the Control Panel and click on the TweakUI icon. Then click on the Boot tab and change the boot settings any way you want.

Set it to boot without the GUI, reboot and install Windows 3.1.

Edit:  Now find that Windows ME has Dos version 8.  Quote from Wiki

With Windows Vista the files on the startup disk are dated 18th April 2005 but are otherwise unchanged, including the string "MS-DOS Version 8 (C) Copyright 1981-1999 Microsoft Corp" inside COMMAND.COM.

There's no way around that.  Microsoft doesn't have a procedure for extracting DOS which leads me to believe that it would violate the EULA.  I'm not about to do that.  So you can do as you were advised or not do it at all.  Keep in mind there are other versions of DOS which I have provided links to that you can use.

you can get, IE5 on windows 3.1 as well.

Do as quantos suggested- you have Too much allocated. I got this error too. But unlike you I was on a real PC, and the smallest DIMM I had was 128MB
