Win 98 to XP money Savings
« on: June 08, 2005, 11:01:38 PM »
Okay I am always looking for ways to save money, who isn’t, and sometimes beat the system a lil.  Here is my question, win XP full install cost $200.00, but you can get the upgrade for $100.00.  I found listed as brand new full install win. 98 for $30.00.  See what I am getting at?   What I want to know is this the same as having the full XP OS?.

Yes I have 2 in computors years they must be geriatrics, one around circa 98 other maybe 96.  My biggest prob. or complaint is I cant back up my data, cant load any hardware without having the Win 98 CD, which I never have had, and god forbid not if but when I have a harddrive crash  So I might be better off just getting the 98 cd and leaving it at that.

TO do a simple back up......make a boot floppy.....and if you have a problem either use the f5/f8 safe mode....or load the boot floppy at the A:\>  type scanreg/restore

Even more is you need it>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-gb;835834

You can install Windows XP Home/Professional upgrade without having to install Windows 98. However, you will always be dependant on Windows 98 to verify that you are allowed to install Windows XP. It will ask for the Windows 98 CD during installation.

Other than that, it is the same operating system.
