Over the last two days whenever I try playing an internet video(i.e. video from youtube etc.) it pauses continuously and keeps buffering.  This is the first time it has done this.  Also, software updates over the internet are taking much longer.

I have DSL.  I've contacted my ISP and they have checked the line and the line appears to be working properly.  I've rebooted the modem.  It's not contact to a router.

I'm using Windows Vista and Internet explorer 7.  However regardless what ever internet browser I use I have same problems.  I tried Google Chrome and Safari.  I have same problems with playing video lately.

I don't have any file sharing software, gaming software.  I just have the basic software that came with the computer.  I don't download files, games etc.  I just pretty much use computer for instant messaging or surfing the web occassionally.

I have two Gigabytes of RAM.  I have not had any problems before up until a couple days ago so.  I have not loaded any new programs etc.  I did a system restore back until 7/3 just in case there might have been some software updates that caused the problem but after doing the restore problem still existed.

I was going to reinitialize my hard drive and then reload everything but didn't want to do that until I could see if there is something else that might be the problem.

One thing to check is that your modem isn't 'flapping'.  That means appearing to work one minute and refusing connections the next minute.

This is fairly common.

I wonder if your modem is dying? Or perhaps getting too hot? That's what happened to me and I was getting the intermittent problem like the one you reported. And when I bought a new modem to replace the old one, all problems went away!  :)

What type of connection do you have ? ?

Who is your ISP?
Do you you know what bandwidth you are paying for?

This might have changed. When I had DSL I had to restart the modem about once a week. When it started running crappy it was time to reset it right quick.

Maybe you want to get yourself a new DSL modem and test it out; this way you'll eliminate the possibility that you had a dying modem, because the ISP already tested that your line should be fine...

Like I'd mentioned earlier, the modem itself could be 'flapping'.  Responding one minute and not the next, but you are correct, unless they test it continuiously then they won't know.  Most techs can't tell if they don't know what to look for.

Well in any case, we need to know what Tennisguy is planning to or has done before we can say more on this issue  :)

What about offline? If it pauses playing video from your hard drive or DVD it would rule out the modem.
