Is the computer bootable to Windows at all?

The computer comes on, I get my confirmation beep, the win xp pro disk starts installing files and then when it says windows will start, I get the dreaded blue screen.

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

What was the initial reason for reinstall?

    1. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
    ...run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

    2. Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

If the CD is in perfect condition, I'd still test RAM, and HD. Bad, new parts happen.

You should be able to disable dual channel mode in BIOS if you're lucky.

Are the RAM slots on your motherboard different colors?
