USB 2.0 extremly slow transfer rates
    « on: August 04, 2009, 03:06:58 AM »
    help!
    :L
i have a new 16gb usb 2.0 today i tried transfering a little over 1 gig from my hard drived onto it and it took 30mins or so. The transfer rate was no more that 2mbps and it is really annoying me. Ive searched the net for solutions but have come across none that would fix my problem.
I am running vista home premium sp2 and my laptop is usb 2.0 enabled.
any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

that doesnt solve my problem though?
thats for copying large files too and from old OS's to and from vista?
The resolution in that link says "get the latest vista service pack" and i have it already?
        I have vista sp2 so...?

Is the drive enclosure rated at USB 2.0?

Keep in mind that the transfer rates are affected by more than just the USB speeds as well.

as in '... Enhanced Host Controller ..."
          if so yes they are...
if not, what do you mean?

Okay, what else do you have running?

How is your antivirus software set, was it scanning what you were writing?

I don't use AVG I use Avast, but I assume that it will give you that option in it's set up somewhere.

Let me see if I can find that.

Are you using a hub to connect the external drive, or is it connected via pure USB.

              I figured it out,
i turned resident shield off and tried, but the transfer rate is still the same...
The usb is connected directly to my laptop.

I was thinking, earlier i tried another usb which i believe is 1.1 (well i think it is because i checked its properties and it didnt say anything about it being a 2.0 device) and the transfer rate was like 10mbps+
Is it possible that my ports are some how running at 1.1 speed or compatability only?

It is, have you checked your BIOS?

              What model is it?

                I was wondering about that...
My knowledge for that side of computing is quite limited, would you be able to run me through on how to do it?

You should be able to access the BIOS using the del or F2 key.  At the beginning of your post does it say to press *whatever key to enter startup?
