      mmmm...
      i looked through the bios menu and could not find anything about usb setting or advanced settings
      i also then uninstalled my usb drivers in safe mode and reinstalled them..
      and nothing has changed
      so either is is the usb which i doubt
      or its a setting in the bios.. thats off my knowledge...
      ill have a better look later though i g2g now..
      anyone have any other suggestions?

      Then the USB ports are probably not 2.0 compatible, they are bringing your hardware back to 1.0.  You could try the drive on another machine, or just get a USB 2.0 add on card.

        My ports are 2.0 compatible, my laptop is near brand new, i bought it new 3months ago
        Also in device manager under the usb tree there are two drivers titled "... enhanced host controller ..."
        Im going to quickly check the bios again... ill update you in a few minutes..

          Yes, that one does indeed have USB 2.0.

          What transfer rates are you getting that seem to slow?

          The transfer rates are limited to the OS you are runnning...this was illustrated early on.

          That model comes with Vista Home Premium.  It can handle it.

          Vista has issues with file transfers ... as i said earlier...

          I'm still interested in finding out if the drive enclosure is rated for 2.0, quite a few older ones weren't.

          Also the transfer speed he mentions in the OP is ambiguous.  Is he talking bits or bytes.

            im assuming that it does support 2.0 its a new laptop, so yeah.
            bits, bytes? I dont know the difference, but i am sure its bytes.

            What more info do you guys need???
