Power supply Problem (I think)

Hello guys,

I have a computer problem with my XP. Currently, I'm having trouble getting it to power on. Only the light and the fan comes online. Can someone tell me what the problem could be, or if I can fix it my self?

You're fine where you are but we're gonna need alot more info on the OS; machine and what happened prior to this to carry on...

Its a Windows XP - Emachines. Before this occured where it wouldnt turn on at all I would have to unplug power chord inside and plug another one on and try it or unplug it from the outlet in the wall, then wait then turn it on. But now, its only the fan and light that wants to come on.

eMachines are notorious for using cheap PSU's....
Borrow another PSU and swap it in there...if it works properly buy a new PSU.

Whats a PSU? So, I can know what to get..
do you think that would be the problem?

PSU is a power supply, and as Patio said these E machines are known for using cheap power supplies.

I think discussion of PSU (Power Supply Units) in computers is unknown territory to many computer owners.  So, I'll elaborate a bit on what the PSU is.  It's the box inside the box.    In other words, where you connect your power cord to your computer is a connection to the PSU, which is a box inside the computer.  If you open your computer and examine it, you'll see that power supply box and you'll see many cords or cables going out of the PSU; they go to the motherboard, hard drive, CD/DVD drives, etc.  In other words, the PSU distributes power to all the components in your computer.  PSUs are rated in terms of overall Wattage capacitiy.  When reading specifications on them, you may also see info on voltage supplied to various components.

Ahh Thanks guys..
It could prob be fixed by a Computer person in Town for less then a hour prob. Maybe?

Is it possible for the guy to switch PSU from my other PC that I got and use it? Cos, I have expensive programs on my eMachines PC..

If you know anyone who is knowledgeable and has done it then no need to spend the money at the shop...
Replacing one takes about 15 minutes.

This won't affect the data on your machine if done properly...
