1790 disk 0 error

Have just upgraded hard drive, now on start up get message 1790 disk 0 error, then when try to boot get failure to load operatin system, (am trying to install xp fronm cd ) I suspect the cd rom drive is faulty (is that the 0 disk?)
any ideas before i buy another cd rom drive

Have the jumpers been set properly?

how big is this hard drive.........hold down del key on boot.........bios setup.......chose setup defaults.......save and exit.......and reboot.......did you mix up the ide cable......check it......before fiddling with the bios......

Set the jumper the same as on the old hard drive.  IDE correct, will double check though.  Hard drive is only 10 gig. Will try BIOS setup.  Can you tell me what drive 1790 disk error is referring to? is it the hard drive?

Thanks for that, very helpful, Bought the hard drive second hand so could be that, if i save default on bios  and it has no effect can I put the old hard drive back in no problem or do I have go into BIOs again.(the old hard drive works fine, just small)
