    Mouse Cursor Help (Win98SE)
    « on: August 15, 2009, 10:46:25 PM »
On my (more specifically THIS) Windows 98SE computer, with IE6 installed, I recently installed new cursors. I am having two problems, and this is split into two different threads (in case you can help with the other problem).

    1. The 'Link' mouse cursor (default is the white hand) remains as the default in Internet Explorer, but uses my customized cursor in other places. (Address in this link: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,89846.0.html, but I was told to have discussion here)
    2. All of the non-default cursors (even Windows large/extra large) flicker when over an animation. (address here)

What resolution are you running the video display at?

What resolution are you running the video display at?

Both 800x600x16 and 1024x768x16 cause flickering

My monitor tells me H=68.7kHz V=85Hz. Adapter is set to 'Optimal'.

I also tried lowering the Video Accelleration rate, but it didn't help.

We're going to need some more information then.

Try using Everest.  Post the log.

Try using Everest.  Post the log.

I'll try, but my Filseclab firewall might crash this computer. Again. I think I set an invalid rule in it...I ended up resetting it.

EDIT: I don't trust trial versions of software. I've learned from past experience...it's too painful to remember...

I've never heard of that firewall before.  Let us know if it does interfere, I have the page, so I can always look it up.

Actually, it wouldn't interfere. Only cause a crash because of lots of blocking of wrong packets and letting wrong ones in...but it's all I could find that had needed features for me (e.g. Win98SE and a lockdown mode on the context menu and free)

I am sorry if this double post is not considered good taste, but I have something to add to the discussion, unrelated to the previous post.

I was going through my C:\WINDOWS\CURSORS folder, and noticed the default cursors are NOT located there; rather, they might be loaded into a DLL. In addition, for Internet Explorer, that link cursor might also be in a DLL.

I have copies of Resource Hacker and the Symantec Resource Editor, so I'll try making 2 copies of each of those DLLs, use one as a backup, modify the other, restart my computer (I make it go to the command prompt on startup), and replace the files. If it works, I'll post. If it doesn't, I'll restore backups and post.

I think that the default cursors would be in the SHELL32.DLL file, but if any of you think otherwise, feel free to tell me.

EDIT: Not in the shell32, I'll try Explorer and the such. But there are interesting resources in SHELL32.DLL

the default cursors I believe are in USER32.

the "hand" cursor would probably be in iexplore.exe or one of it's satellite dll's, I don't think IE uses the "default" hand cursor

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\USER32.DLL only has the "Version Information" tree item in the resource tree
I've checked "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\(*.exe, *.dll, /s)" for CURSOR resources, none of them did the trick.
