Blue Screen of Death and many more problems
    « on: August 30, 2009, 03:39:43 PM »
    Hello,
I'm having some serious computer issues and would really appreciate some help. I'm pretty computer illiterate so I apologize for the long post- I'm just trying to give all info that may be helpful:

I have a compaq v6000 with Windows XP and two days ago got a blue screen of death message. It said Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8062D39F, 0xED08799C, 0x00000000).

I went into safe mode and restarted using the last good configuration (I think that's what it was called) and I got windows to start again. Now I'm having some new problems: the audio won't work correctly, and the only wireless network I can use is the unsecured linksys network. I have a home network that is showing up, but it won't let me get on it.

Also, I managed to find "computer management" on my computer and there were exclamation points next to several things:
    Network Adapters: Direct Parallel
    Other Devices: Unknown Device
Sound, Video and Game Controllers: audio codecs, conexant high definition audio, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, microsoft kernel system audio device, video codecs

Not sure if this is significant, but about a year and a half ago the internal wireless card on my computer broke so I've been using an external usb card. I had two of them lying around. one of them (dynex) will pick up the unsecured network i mentioned, but the other (belkin) won't pick up anything. When using the dynex card, the home network shows up but it won't let me get on it. when i click it, it says that the network is now out of range (but i haven't moved!).

I also tried going on the HP site and downloading any new updates that sounded relevant, but it doesn't seem to help.

Thanks so much for your help! I'm in a jam and really don't want to have to buy a new computer right now...

Thanks so much. I'm now able to access my home network, which is a huge help! I'm still having trouble with the audio, though. For example, f I try to play something through iTunes it tells me that there is a problem with the audio configuration, or if I try to watch a video online, there won't be any sound. Any suggestions?

      Thanks again for your help!

Try re-installing your audio device drivers...
That and check to see nothing is set on mute in Control Panel/Sounds and Multimedia...

If you still don't have sound after following patio's advice, look in device manager - are there any yellow asterisks?

        Thank you for the responses.

I have tried to update the drivers but that doesn't seem to be doing anything. Also, the audio icon that should come up in my control panel is no longer doing so.

I don't see any yellow asterisks in Device Manager, but there are yellow circles with exclamation points next to:

        Network Adapters: Direct Parallel
        Other Devices: Unknown Device
Sound, Video and Game Controllers: audio codecs, conexant high definition audio, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, video codecs

At the advice of a post on another computer forum I tried to uninstall "microsoft kernel system audio device" and then have it search for hardware changes and reinstall, but, as far as i can tell, it didn't notice anything was missing when it searched for hardware changes. So now I'm missing that too and can't find a place to download it.

        Thanks again!

Sorry - I meant exclamation points, not asterisks (it's early here). What do you mean you've "tried" to update the drivers? Did you reinstall the drivers?

Did you recently reinstall the OS and if so did you install the chipset driver?

By "tried" I mean I don't really know what I'm doing lol...
I went to this site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3200953&lang=en

and downloaded/installed the driver updates. I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled anything. If you could tell me how to do that I'd really appreciate it.

Do you still have your Compaq Driver CD ? ?
If so re-install All your drivers on that cd...
            MBoard chipset drivers go FIRST.

                1.  Model Number and Product Number.  If you haven't done so already:  Locate the Notebook Product Number or Model Number.

                2.  Download and Install Drivers.  With the correct Product Number and Model Number you should be able to locate, download, and install the appropriate drivers from the HP/Compaq Support site.  Per patio's instructions the motherboard chipset drivers go first.

If you have internet access, perhaps "HP Help & Support Center" would assist:
                   1.  Click Start, and then select Help & Support .
                   2.  Select Update Software & Drivers .
                   3.  Follow the prompt in Step 1 to Check for Microsoft Windows Updates .
                   4.  Follow the prompt in Step 2 to Check for HP Software Updates.

Failing that, you should be able to restore the machine to it's delivered state by using the Recovery Discs.  I'm assuming all your "data" will be lost if you choose this option.

Before you purchase a replacement recovery disc

The HP Recovery Manager, installed on your PC, allows you to recover the original operating system, or create a set of recovery discs from the special recovery partition on the hard drive.

You do not need to purchase a replacement recovery disc to return your computer to proper operating condition unless the drive is corrupted.

To determine if the HP Recovery Manager is operational, press the power switch to turn on the computer, and then repeatedly press F11 during the startup. The computer will display a prompt to either recover the operating system or create a set of recovery discs if the Recovery Manager is operational, and you do not need to purchase a replacement recovery disc.

For detailed instruction on creating your own recovery discs, see Using HP Backup and Recovery Manager (in Vista) or Using the PC Recovery Solution (in XP) .

Did you make any hardware or software changes right before you got the blue screen? Like install a program or download something?

Do you have all of your udates/service packs?

Have you tried doing a system restore to before the problem?

My issues seem to be resolved! I used the Recovery manager and it saved all my files and got me up and running again. Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it!

You're welcome.  I guess I need to research the "HP Recovery Manager".  I'm surprised your data was preserved.  Go HP ! ! !   8)
