Windows 95 disc
« on: August 21, 2009, 09:28:05 PM »
Are there any exceptions in the Microsoft rules about installing OEM disks on computers other than the computer it was originally installed on?

I've got a copy of Windows 95 and product key that goes with it...But the book that comes with the disk says that it's only good for installation on a new Compaq computer...   I'm sure that Compaq computer is long gone...who knows where..

It may or may not install fine, give it a try.
If that one is a true MS disk it should be fine, if it's from Compaq then it may only work on that machine.

Smeezekitty, when you don't know what you're talking about, maybe don't say anything.

It says "Microsoft" on the disk    ....and "for distribution only with a new pc".  It doesn't say anything about Compaq on the installation disk....

On the book that comes with the disk (which I believe is the original instruction manual that came with it) there is a sticker on the cover that says..."for distribution with a new Compaq pc only?

If the disk is labelled by MS you should be fine.

Well I got it installed... But on rebooting I got this error:

While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error

You need to restart your computer

Of course when I restart it does the same thing....  I'm too tired to pull another all-nighter...I'll work on it later  :P

hey, does anyone know if Windows 95 supports AGP cards?   I have a suspision that the reason I'm getting that error message on reboot, is because I'm not using the onboard video...I'm using an AGP card and there are probably no drivers for it installed...

But Safe Mode doesn't seem to work either, which uses and basic VGA driver, so I'm not quite sure...   I'll pull out the AGP card and see if it makes a difference..

AGP wasn't even a pipe dream when Win95 stopped shipping...i'd remove the card.

LOl

Ok, I removed the card and did the installation again, but I'm still getting the same error...   There some info. at the Microsoft knowledge base on this error that I had planned on following, here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263466

but I like to coordinate my efforts with the good people of CH  ;)

Anyway, when i did the installation I had to use a Windows 98 boot disk as opposed to a Win95 boot disk, because the win95 boot disc doesn't have CD rom support..

Does it matter what boot disk is used?

No. It should not matter...it's only used to initialise devices.

We're gonna need some system info on this machine...

BlockHead- How much RAM is in this machine? Windows 95 and 98 encounter that Bluescreen error with IOS if there is too much RAM.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
