Hey thanks everybody for all the posts.
As a result of these I have 4 questions. (Sorry if I'm up with the lingo. ;D)
    1. what does a purge do? vs. a re-format?
    2. Boot and Nuke? huh? is this another name for re-formatting?
    3. How does one make sure the re-format is done correctly?
    4. Virut? ??? is this the name of a virus that can withstand a re-format?

I'll answer number 4 because I know the answer.

Virut is a horrible virus, one which is so damaging that the only cure is a complete format. It is purely damaging, infecting all executables and other files so that it can continue to spread. The exact functions of it or the damage it can inflict, I do not know, but it inflicts a lot of damage.

I was able to hit f-10 upon start up and was able to do a system restore and have gained control of the computer again. I saw that the viruses even made their own shortcuts on my desktop.
Anyway, I downloaded and ran malwarebytes and removed 71 infected files.
Now the computer is running slow, so I suspect that there is still some viruses in there somewhere.
Should I post a hijack this log for someone to review? or is there another method to do first?
      thanks

OK , so use the process tool to remove the bad entries in HJT...there are a number of threats to remove.

Consider upgrading to SP2 at least, there are vital security fixes in that Service pack that you should have.

HJT is not telling me than anything needs fixed.
I can't find anywhere that says process tool. (I down loaded the latest HJT)
Iwas very suprised to learn that I only have SP1.
Is there anywhere I can get it for free or do I have to pay?

SP2 is a free update from MS

Get your computer clean first before upgrading service packs.

Boot and nuke is completly different to a re-format, it uses specific and high end removal alarythms, its used by federal governments etc,

Bascially put, once you run it, you wont be able to get anything back...

a virus cannot defend itself from a proper reformat. period.

I've never actually encountered this, but I have heard of a couple of times when an FDISK was needed to remove one.

probubly because there is multiable partitions
no virus can survive a total format
because it changes evrey single sector

                Aka. a security format.

                Deletes everything on the computer.
                Fills the disk with junk
                Repeat MANY times.
