my windows XP machine keeps crashing at moments of higher cpu usage, like saving or opening an application, althought task manager says its running nowhere near 100% percent. it doesnt blue screen and i dont get any error messages, i have to leave it for half an hour bfore trying again or it crashs during start up.

That suggested over heating to me but its not paticularly hot and the fans on but not working any harder than usual.

    hope you can help

Turns off? Do you mean it powers off, exits Windows and sits at a black screen, or reboots?

yeah, it just like cuts out, as if someone pulled the plug out. it doesn't reboot. ive check the plug already its in propperly, you think it could be the PSU ?

Sure sounds like it. Certainly hardware related.

so after it cuts out / crashes / turns off. if i try and boot again it does the same again, the longer i leave it the further it gets into the start up, and if i leave it long enough i can get it back into windows. dont know if that gives you any help? would a damaged PSU cool down like that and gradually get better? are there any software diognostic tools that can find hardware problems?

          Cheers

          Could it be overheating?

When was the last time that you cleaned out the computer?

Download Speedfan and check your temps.

            http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

            Post your results...

I'm leaning towards a PSU problem.

After rereading your post you might not even be able to run that app...oops

Had you moved the computer just before the problems started?...Any accidental jolts?..... reseat your memory, all cards, make sure the heatsink is flush to the motherboard and firmly in place.....the extra draw on a weakened power supply may be causing the shutdown and it doesn't take much of a power fluctuation to cause a problem....how old is this pc and have you ever changed the PSU?

Hey thanks for getting involved everyone, its a desk top. Havent moved it lately but will try and reseat the memory etc. I think it must be the tempretures as i Vac'd the insided of the case last night, there wasnt much in there but since then i cant get it to crash! But the speed fan results are still averging over 60 degrees so im guessin it'll crash again under any kind of dustt build up now,

avoid using a vacuum in a computer
the static eletricity build up can damage the motherboard or processor
