Do I need a molex connector?
    « on: August 23, 2009, 06:34:21 PM »
Hello all. I'm in the process of adding some IDE hard drives to my computer. I installed an ATA PCI adapter card since my computer only supports SATA drives. I got the first IDE drive connected and works perfectly. BUT I didn't realize until I began installing it that there is only one power connector (if that's what it's called. Or maybe a molex connector?) So even though I can add my other hard drives, they won't have any power. So am I right about the molex connector? Is that what I need? Here's a link to what I'm talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Molex_female_connector.jpg
    Thanks guys.

Wow! Thanks for the incredibly fast reply. One question though, I know to connect the two ends that are just alike to the hard drives, but where would the other end go?

What you need is actually a SATA to Molex splitter.  Any local shop will have them in stock.

take the molex off of your first harddrive
      plug it into the connector
then connect each other end of the connector to each harddrive

      heres a text diagram
      Code: [Select]

                                          [HDD1]
                                           ^
      [PSU]------>SPLITTER----|
                                            v
                                           [HDD2]
and Quantos please read the post again

Does your PSU have a Molex connector on it?  You stated that your motherboard only supports SATA.

Yes but it only has one. I connected the first hard drive to that one.

Then yes, you need the Molex splitter.  Any local shop will have them.
I've seen numerous PSU's that don't have a Molex connector on them.

You can use a Molex splitter or a SATA to Molex converter.

You need at least a molex splitter an a molex connector since you need to power the one device that you have connected an make the other one run down to the drive.

I shouldn't need anything more than the molex splitter. The drive is IDE but I added an ATA PCI adapter card to connect the IDE HDD's to. So all I need is to get power to them via the splitter  :)
                  Unless I'm missing something.

I'm not signed up for email notifications, thank goodness  :P
I went to a local "mom and pop" PC shop to get the connector but he doen't carry them. Thought I'd support a local PC Tech in this down economy but he said they are so inexpensive and so rarely requested that it's not worth it for him to order and pay for the shipping or something like that. Oh well, back to Newegg!  ;D
