cant move video files to ipod
    « on: September 15, 2009, 07:18:34 PM »
    Hi all
I am on Win XP Pro and have a 4th generation IPOD..
The only way I am able to move music and successfully play it is from a CD....

I have also done every step in the user guide to try and put tv shows on the IPOD..... it says that I can drag and drop in the manual, I have tried that and other things to no avail...Any suggestions would be much appreciated...I have tried to drag and drop or manually add an MP3 file as well but that didnt work either. Thanks for your advice in advance.

Okay. Let's forget tv shows for a second. Does they ipod sync with itunes and download mp3's from the computer in the normal way?

The only thing itunes will let me do is if I run a cd I can drag the songs from the folder into itunes that way, but itunes wont let me drag and drop anything else from the computer into it, mp3's, videos, doesnt matter, thats what I dont understand....Do you think the problem would be fixed if I reset the ipod to factory default settings? Dont want to do that unless I have to, would have to put all the songs from the cd's already on there all over again....

I didn't ask about drag and drop. I asked about syncing.

Well, that's odd. iTunes recognizes the iPod but won't interact with it. Okay, a few questions:

                1) In iTunes, when the iPod is connected you should see it listed on the left side. When you click on it does the right pane display the iPod contents? And on the bottom does it show syncing options? Are they set up properly?

                2) In iTunes - EDIT - PREFERENCES - Device Tab:
                  A) Make sure "disable automatic syncing" is NOT checked
                  B) Is your device listed?

                3) I assume there are songs listed in iTunes library. What happens when you click on FILE - SYNC IPOD?

                    1. The ipod is not listed on the left however on the right I can see the contents/songs listed. on the bottom it doesnt show syncing options.

                    2. a) it is not checked.
                        b) it is not listed anywhere I can see.

                    3.  sync ipod is there but whited out to prevent me from choosing it.

Thanx for the help so far, hope this helps narrow down the problem.....

If the ipod is not listed on the left then the songs you see on the right are what is on your computer, not the ipod. iTunes does not see your iPod.

I suggest installing (or RE-installing) the latest iTunes (download it directly from the Apple website). Reboot. Open iTunes and plug the iPod into the computer. Wait a minute or two. Does iTunes now show the iPod?

Great suggestion.  Please let us know if the iPod shows up in itunes after the reinstall.  Once it shows up you'll be in good shape.
