AVG 9 released

hhmmm for me i installed both avg 8.5 and avast 4.8 both pro ed. and works better than one AV. some malware and worms cannot be detected by avg and it does in avast, as well in vice versa.

ill suggest have them both.

it works fine in my pc. but you need to disable  the scheduled scan of avg..
scheduled scan can make your computer slow during scanning hour.

Two drugs for same purpose on realtime  may sooner or later blow up. Who knows?

It may work for you but I'd rather have less stuff on my computer if I could. Besides, AVG and AVAST are both getting updated pretty frequently so I think either good enough by itself.

thanks for the concern..

i thank god nothing yet happen in my computer but im using them both for a year and a half..
im using avg for firewalll purposes and some worms that is not detected in avast.

It's your computer. You can do there whatever you want, but, please refrain from statements like:

It's against any computer knowledgeable people recommendation.
Some newbie may take your advice seriously and WE'll have to deal with any possible problems.

I also liked AVG, had a few problems getting 8 to run, but got some advice on hereand OK.
So, I downloaded Version 9. Found that it was incompatible with Windows Defender and that even though the email (Outlook Express) was ticked/checked to  check incomings and outgoings, neither of these occurred. Iwas told that it is set for Outlook only.
Have re installed 8.5 and all is working normally again.
Hopefully they will iron out some bugs so I can download and use 9 again.
I am a numpty with computers, so don't know enough to dive into its bowels to fix these things.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. 32 bit, with windows defender and no other firewall. Would like to go back to 9 if possible.

Well, let's at least get a few facts straight. Windows Vista does not have Outlook Express; it has Windows Mail.  And, Windows Defender provides malware protection; it is not a firewall.  So, you should also be using Windows Firewall or a third-party firewall.

As far as scanning of mail in Outlook Express (my guess is this also applies to Windows Mail), I gather the proper plug-in must be installed during the installation of AVG.  The following comes from an FAQ at http://free.avg.com/us-en/faq?num=1286#faq_1286

It’s important to choose the correct e-mail plug-in to install during the AVG installation process. It depends on your e-mail client. If you use an email client for sending/receiving e-mails which has its own plug-in available in AVG, please install this specialized plug-in in preference:

    * AVG MS Outlook Extension if you use Microsoft Outlook.
    * AVG Plugin For The BAT! for The BAT! e-mail client.
    * If you use any other program (Outlook Express, Incredimail, Mozilla etc.), please install the Personal E-mail Scanner service.

The installation of e-mail plugins should be done following way:

    * Download the AVG Free installation file (section Installation files, link AVG Free 8.5 for Windows).
    * When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the Save button and choose a location, where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
    * Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG_...) and launch it by double-click on its icon.
    * Please follow the wizard and select the Add or remove components option.
    * In the Component Selection window, please tick the E-mail Scanner plugin(s) you wish to use.
    * Finish the installation wizard and restart your computer.

Not to mention, that mail scanning is just overkill, eating up some extra resources.
Mail is scanned by regular AV engine anyway.

henell, I agree with Broni and evilfantasy.  See the article evilfantasy posted.  The absence of a specific setting to scan incoming and outgoing messages is really not a significant issue.  From the article:

"Any good up-to-date anti-virus will prevent you from opening a malicious worm or virus no matter how it arrived. Until and unless you click the attachment the virus or worm will not execute."
