« on: October 26, 2009, 11:03:36 PM »
So i just installed windows Xp on my friends computer. Now for some reason i cant get his internet to work. He has comcast internet. I tried resetting the modem and router and even then it doesnt even show that the computer is connected to a router under the network connections thing. when i try typing in 192.168.1.1 in IE it doesnt come up with a menu or anything....but it was working just fine before the Xp installation. So...what did i break lol? ;D   Any other info you need to know to help me just let me know.

PS. i know the router is  Linksys

From your friend's computer, bring up a command prompt window, enter the following commands, and "post" the output to this thread:
           o  ipconfig /all
           o  route print

      To get a command window:
           o  Start
           o  Run
o  type "cmd" without quotes, select OK

The following syntax will redirect command output to a text file (if that helps):
           o  ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt
           o  route print > c:\route.txt

Something else you can do to make it quicker to get to a command prompt in the future is start, accessories, right click on command prompt and click on pin to start menu.

Then command prompt is always on your start menu.  Very handy.

You probably need the ethernet driver. Click Start then Run and type in devmgmt.msc and press enter. This will take you to device manager. Do you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points there?
