dst short test fail - 2000-0146
    « on: November 23, 2009, 03:14:27 PM »
yesterday my computer basically froze after being on all night. i could move the mouse, but no programs would run or open. task manager also would not open. i restarted the computer and the same thing happened. on the next restart i hit F12 and went into the diagnostic tests. the following tests failed:

DST short test: fail, error 2000-0146

during the second part of the diag these are the errors i received:

    0F00:0244
MSG: Block 79612 uncorrectable data error or media is write protected
MSG: Block 79613 uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

when i go to start in safe mode, i get an error saying there's a problem loading SPTD.sys. i can hit esc and it loads to safe mode.

i have a dell inspiron e1505 (laptop), windows xp media center edition, SP2

what are my options for fixing this problem?

    thanks!

You're the second one in a week with the same computer with hard drive issues!  DST is Western Digital or Seagate?  Download the appropriate free diagnostic software, create the CD, then boot from it and run the tests.

it's a seagate, which is a little odd because all  of the recommended compatible drives on dell's website for my computer are WD.

where do i go to download the diagnostic software?

btw, that sign in your signature is really stalkerish!!

        SeaTools...

to make a cd to boot from, can i just burn the .exe file to a cd?

which one am i supposed to download? i downloaded seatools for windows and i've got it running now on my computer..very very slowly, but running. the SMART test passed, the long DST testand the short DST test failed.

would the tests run better/faster by booting from a cd?

That's the recommended method of running them...whether it'll be faster or not i won't speculate...

There are instructions on the site for creating a bootable CD.

.iso, ISO CD-ROM Image; burn image to CD.

It says SeaTools right in the middle.  Clik on it.
            Seatools

It says Download SeaTools for DOS now! Clik on it.
            Seatools for DOS

This is a waste of time...the drive is dead/dying.

Keep in mind Seagate drives carry a 5 year warranty...you may be in luck.

i didn't know that. i think my warranty may be up...or may be coming up in the spring. before this happened to my hdd, i was already thinking about getting a new, bigger hdd so this just made me do it sooner.

if the warranty was still valid and they fix it or replace it, can i put it in a hdd case and use it as an extra external drive?

edit: The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.
If you purchased this unit directly from Seagate, please return to the previous page and verify your Seagate customer number, because the customer number you entered () does not match our records.

my warranty with dell for the computer is up, but i'll check with them to see if it's still covered in any way.
