    Cannot Connect to Internet
    « on: December 08, 2009, 08:01:31 PM »
My computer (HP Presario SR1130NX running Windows XP) has been unable to connect to the internet even though a good signal is coming through the Ethernet cable. The cable can be plugged into any of my laptops and works fine. The stricken computer even acknowledges the signal as excellent, but my two browsers (IE and Firefox) cannot seem to do anything with it. I simply get the message that they cannot connect. This came about casually, overnight, so I suspect I may have a hardware problem. My computer runs really well, but it is also old. As best I can tell, a virus or malware is not causing this. I use Avast and Prevx and neither of them are finding anything, nor did I do anything to get a virus. How do I begin to fix this situation?

    1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

    2. Type in (or copy and paste):

              cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

          and press Enter.

    3. Notepad will open.

    4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

"Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check name and try again."

This is the response I am getting from the computer that doesn't work. I made sure several times that I did not make any mistakes when entering the command. When the same cable is plugged into my laptop, I get the full report via Notepad, and all is well.

I'd spend 15 bucks for new network card. You definitely have no connection.

      Try one more thing...

      1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

      2. Type in (or copy and paste):

                cmd /c ping 209.85.171.99>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

            and press Enter.

      3. Notepad will open.

      4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

That would be the cheapest fix.
