    « on: January 05, 2010, 12:43:45 PM »
      :-\
    hello

i switched from comcast to Wildblue satellite.   Internet connection was fine the day of installation but the next day I couldn't connect after two one hour conversationns with Wildblue support.  They won't send anyone to check b\c they say it's my laptop which I conferred.  After unugging modem, computer. Etc it's not working.  With comcast it was fine.  I went to cmd and typed in ipconfig/flushdns and it said "the requested operation requires elevation." don't know what the heckthat means! :/
also updated my spyware scanner on flAshdrive and scanned fine but no chAnge.

    Thanks for any Advice!!

I told you how to run the command from an elevated prompt in the other thread. Did you do it?

      Hi Allan

yes I did that; the computer seems to be quicker but still can't get online.
I downloaded the softpedia winsock app but it didn't download right?  Isaved it to my flash drive at friends house but it had the yellow pyramid w/ ! When I tried to run it it says "registry import information not found"--Will have to go back and try toredowload, I guess.

        1.  See:  What to Do with "The requested operation requires elevation" in Vista.

        2.  Operating System.  Which operating system and service pack level are you using; e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP3?

        3.  Computer.  So, you have a laptop computer...
             a.  Did you use it to connect to someone else's network or did you reconfigure its network connection properties?

             b.  How do you connect the laptop to the satellite connection; "wired" ethernet cable or "wireless"?

             c.  Are there other computers in the household (desktop, laptop, netbook) that successfully access the internet through your satellite connection?

        4.  Suggest you troubleshoot connectivity with "ipconfig" and "ping" commands.  Unfortunately (for me?), I'm not familiar with Vista...
             a.  Use "ipconfig /all" command to get:
                  (1)  Your assigned IPv4 address
                  (2)  Your assigned subnet mask
                  (3)  Your "gateway" IPv4 address
                  (4)  DNS server IPv4 addresses

             b.  Is your IPv4 address in the "169.254.x.x" IPv4 range (an APIPA address)?

             c.  See what you can successfully "ping":
                  (1)  ping 127.0.0.1
                  (2)  ping <your_laptop_IPv4_address>
                  (3)  ping <gateway_IPv4_address>
                  (4)  ping <dns_server_IPv4_address>
                  (5)  ping www.computerhope.com
                  (6)  ping 69.72.169.241

               a. no
               b. Wired
               c.  No
          4.  (1.) ipv4 70.41.82.46
              (2.) subnet mask 255.255.252.0

          c.  (1.) worked
(2.) says " the system can't find file specified"
(3.). Says:  " the syntax of the command is incorrect"
            (4.). Ditto # (3.)
(5.). Worked gave ip addr. 69.72.169.241
             (6.). Yes this worked fine
took me awhile toanswer on iPhone.

            1.  Good News - ping OK.  You're able to "ping" an internet website address both by its Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) and IPv4 address (for Computer Hope website).

For your information (FYI), the notation "<your_laptop_IPv4_address>" meant you were to enter the requested information within the brackets, but without the brackets.  Confusing I know...  For example:
                 a.  ping <your_laptop_IPv4_address>  might be "ping 70.41.82.46"
                 b.  ping <gateway_IPv4_address>       might be "ping 70.40.80.1"
                 c.  ping <dns_server_IPv4_address>   might be "ping 12.175.230.61"

            2.  Tracert.  If you now do a "tracert" command, you should see the multiple "hops" taken through the internet to reach the site.  (This would further confirm, you have "some" access to the internet.)  Try "tracert www.computerhope.com" or "tracert 69.72.169.241".

            3.  DNS Server.  Since you successfully resolved the FQDN www.computerhope.com to its IPv4 address, your DNS server correctly performed its function (at least that one time).

Sometimes DNS servers get busy and are unable to respond to a domain name resolution request within a reasonable amount of time.  If you're using an internet browser to access a website by it's domain name address, e.g. www.computerhope.com, and the DNS server is too busy, the browser will be unable to get the IPv4 address it "actually" uses to connect to the website.

To further complicate the issue, the DNS server may have to forward the "domain name address" to other DNS servers to resolve.  So name resolution is always a potential issue when there are internet access issues.

            4.  Internet Browser.
                 a.  Which internet browser and version are you using?
                 b.  Try to "browse" to the following addresses:
                      (1)  http://www.computerhope.com
                      (2)  http:// 69.72.169.241
                      (3)  https://www.eff.org

Note:  "https" is a different protocol used for "secure" access.  Not all websites accept this protocol.  The address I gave does.

              1.  a.  General failure (100% loss)
                   b.  Successful
                   c. Successful

              4. a.  Ie8
                   B(1.) unsuccessful
                      (2.). Unsuccessful
                       (3.). Unsuccessful

I did accomplish the tracert (showing all the hops) to www. Computerhope.com
              Thanks.   Gwen

                1.  Currently, I see two anomalies in your configuration.
                     a.  Unable to ping IPv4 address of your own computer.
                     b.  Gateway address is not on same network as IPv4 address of your own computer.

                2.  I'm confused because you should always be able to ping the IPv4 address of your own computer.  You've indicated 100% failure on that ping test.
                     a.  Is the internet network connection of your computer set to automatically use DHCP to configure your TCP/IP parameters?
                     b.  Can you use "ipconfig" to "release" and then "renew" your IPv4 address?

                3.  For your computer to send messages off its local area network (LAN), it must be on the same logical network as its default gateway.  This means the "network address" component of the IPv4 address of both computers must be the same.  It isn't.  Something's wrong.

The "Subnet Mask" determines which portion of the IPv4 address represents the "network address" component and which represents the "host node" component.

                  2  a.  Don't know
                       b.  Yes. -then I pinged Ipv4 (failure)
Then pinged gateway Ipv4 and was
                              and was successful this time.

Would this inconsistency between the gateway IPv4 and the IPv4 have anything to do with installation of WildBlue after disconnecting Comcast?  I never had a problem with Comcast--?

                        1.  Satellite Connection.  The last "satellite" connection thread I worked on had a single box that acted as a satellite modem/gateway/DHCP server all in one.  It also could be configured to act in one of three different modes.  Maybe we should try to understand the environment you're working with.
                             a.  Is the laptop "wired" directly to the satellite modem/gateway device or through a home router to the device?
                             b.  Can you provide the make, model name/number of the device?  May be a sticker somewhere on back or bottom of device.  I'd like to find a user manual for it.

It is too soon to assume their hardware isn't working properly.  My guess is their hardware works and this is a software configuration issue somewhere.

                        2.  Ipconfig.  Please post the output of the "ipconfig /all" command.  If you use the syntax "ipconfig /all > ipout.txt", the output will be redirected to the file "ipout.txt" in the directory the command is executed from.  You should be able to cut and paste output to this thread.

                        3.  Routing Table.  Please post the output of the "route print" command.  If you use the syntax "route print > rteout.txt, the output will be redirected to the file "rteout.txt" in the directory the command is executed from.  You should be able to cut and paste output to this thread.

                          1a.  Directly to satellite modem
                           b.  ViaSat

                              1.  "ipconfig /all".  Thank you for the "ipconfig" output.  Just to let you know, did not receive the "route print" output.  In its place, you posted the ipconfig output a second time.  It shows:
                                   a.  Node Type of "Peer-Peer".  While I've never seen this before, apparently it sets the "how" and "order" of name resolution checks, therefore should not affect any troubleshooting efforts using the numeric IPv4 addresses.
                                   b.  DHCP and autoconfiguration are enabled, so your basic TCP/IP parameters are configured and set automatically with values from a DHCP server.  The basic parameters look reasonable to me (IPv4 Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS server).  Your IPv4 address is on the same network as the default gateway.  (My earlier claim that they were not was based on a "typo" in one of your earlier posts.)
                                   c.  Primary WINS Server.  I don't understand why it's set to "127.0.0.1", but again since it stands for Windows Internet Name Service; it should not affect any troubleshooting efforts using numeric IPv4 addresses.
                                   d.  IPv6.  As I haven't worked with Vista or IPv6 some of the output is puzzling to me.  Particularly why there are so many entries for IPv6.  Might bear further analysis.  For troubleshooting purposes, I'd just "uncheck" the Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 protocol from the wired network adaptors defined connection (and reboot).

                              2.  Internet Service Provider.
                                   a.  Does someone else's computer successfully connect and browse Internet using your wildblue connection?
                                   b.  Does laptop successfully connect and browse Internet using someone else's broadband internet service (connection)?  If yes, then your TCP/IP stack and winsock should be OK.

                              3.  Internet Options/Network Connections.
                                   a.  Does the laptop have any "dial-up" connections defined?  If yes, you might want to delete them.
                                   b.  Also ensure options to "dial" a connection are unchecked within "Connections" tab of Internet Options window.

                              4.  Unable to get online.  Describe what you mean by this.  Post the "exact" error, informational message, or symptoms that occur when you try.

                              5.  Browsers.  Clear the browser caches and disable any proxy settings.
                                   a.  Internet Explorer (IE8).  Try disabling the "proxy", if set.  In Internet Explorer click Tools/Internet Options/Connections and click LAN Settings...uncheck any box that has a check mark in it...(no check marks for auto-detect, auto config script, or for the proxy).  The proxy server is designed to provide better web browsing response, but is not required.
                                   b.  Firefox.  Download, install, and try the latest Mozilla Firefox browser.  It won't have a "proxy" server set.  In Firefox, to veriy, click Tools/Options/Advanced/Network/How to connect and check the "No Proxy" box...
                                   c.  From both browsers, try to access HP FTP Server website using "FTP" protocol:  "ftp://ftp.hp.com/" and "ftp://15.217.49.73/".

                              6.  Firewalls.  Check your firewall settings (for what exactly, I'm not sure).

                              7.  Ping.  You should always be able to "ping" your own IPv4 address, especially if you can successfully ping the default gateway address.  Please ping these two values again and post the "exact" error message you receive if not successful (and an average response time if successful).  For example:
                                   a.  Request timed out.
                                   b.  PING: transmit failed, error code 1231.
                                   c.  Destination Host Unreachable.

                              8.  WildBlue Forum.  Suggest you open a parallel thread on the wildblue forum.  While they accept no responsibility for your computer configuration, it appears you might get some assistance from their "Moderators" who apparently are wildblue employees if you are civil.  See http://wildblueworld.com/forum/.  Look at either the "Tech Chat: WildBlue and beyond!" or "Questions, Problems and Troubleshooting" categories.

                              9.  Ubuntu Live CD.  A Live CD contains a bootable operating system that will load and run from the CD (does not need to be installed to the hard drive).  The Ubuntu Live CD is about 700 MBytes of data.  Probably more than you want to download.  But you may request a "free" CD.  They say it could take several weeks for delivery, however.  I mention the Ubuntu Live CD because it's pretty good about automatically configuring its network connection for an internet connection upon boot.  You might be able to use it to further convince yourself the problem is your laptop software/configuration and not the wildblue hardware.  See http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu.
