Internet on win 98 with LAN card bus

OK I have recieved this laptop and two days before that it was running on the internet. Win 98 on a LAN card bus. How do i set this card up to run in lan? when i hook it up to the router no light apear that another connection is made i can't get on the net either.

When the laptop is on, and you insert the card into the card bus slot, does the power light come on?  There should at least be some indication (a light) that the card is receiving power.  If you can verify that the card is receiving power then your next step would be to make sure the driver is installed properly.  To verify this, right-click on "my computer", click properties, click on the "device manager tab, and look where it says PCMCIA.. Do you see your card bus there in the list with a properly installed driver?

Once that is done, then you need to verify that tcp/ip and "client for microsoft networks" is installed.  To verify this, go to control panel and click on "network".  On the configuration tab, do you see tcp/ip and Client For Microsoft Networks in the list?  If not, you need to get those installed... What do you see in the list?

OK, when i insert the card (this bus is connected to the internet through cable) (i just hope i'm talking about the right computer chip) and there is no card light. but on the task bar it shows the usb simbol and when i click it It shows "stop FE575C-3com 10/100 LAN cardbus-fast ethernet." There is a driver installed for on  the control panel there is an icon that says "PC card PCMCIA" and about the list i have
-client for microsoft networks
-microsoft family logon
-windows logon

Ok, so the computer is recognizing the card and it's fair to say power is getting to the card.

I'm not sure what you mean by this.  Did you right click "my computer", click properties, device manager tab, and verify that the driver is installed?  I mean, did you actually see the name "FE575C-3com 10/100 LAN cardbus-fast ethernet." in the pcmcia category.  You should see this name and there should be nothing indicating an error...

Once you confirmed this, you're going to need to add/install the tcp/ip software for the pcmcia card.  Your card bus adapter should also be in that list with tcp/ip. If it is not, its a sign that the driver might not be installed.  Click on "add", highlight "protocol" and click "add", highlight "microsoft" and click "add".  On the right side, scroll down the list and highlight  TCP/IP and click "OK".  TCP/IP should then be in the list, along with "client for microsoft netowrk".  At this point does your pcmcia card show up?

by the contro panel thing i meant to say that there is a driver for there is an icon present with the words PCMcia socet. when i add instal software (which i believe is installed) were and what do i open am i still in my computer/properties?

when you right-click on "my computer", click "properties, click on the "Device Manager" tab    Then you'll see a list of hardware categories.  Look where is says, PCMCIA.  Click on the "+" sign next to that and it will display all the devices for that catagory.  Do you see FE575C-3com 10/100 LAN cardbus-fast ethernet in that list???  It should be there before we proced and there should be nothing indicating an error, such as yellow exclamation marks or red question marks..

If it is not, then you'll have to find another machine with an Internet connection so you can locate and download the driver for your it..  However, sometimes, Windows provides drivers, we'll just have to see what we get here...

The number i see under Network adapter but under PCMCIA socket it says Toshiba ToPIC100 card bus controller

What do you mean by this?      Are you saying your FE575C-3com adapter is under the "network adapter" category?   If it is, that's fine as long as NO errors apparent..

Ok good..

Now do this:

Go to control panel and click on "network"..  on the configuration tab, click on "add"..  Then highlight "protocol" and click on ADD.  On the left side, click on MICROSOFT, and on the right side, scroll down and highlight TCP/IP, and then click "OK"...   After that, TCP/IP should be in your list on the configuration tab... Exit out of everything and restart the computer and see if you can get to the Internet...

Are you sure the cable is good?

Open a command prompt in Windows:

type:   ipconfig

does it give you your default gateway (router IP address), laptop IP address, and subnet mask?

I'm sorry what do you mean by "your defult gateway and i will try another cable(wire once i get home) For the command Do i type that on the main computer (in which the router is connected or the laptop which i want to have internet.) because at that time i don't think there was a rounter so how will it know theres a router?
