When the doors to the long anticipated Apple Event in San Francisco opened there was a greater than ever frenzy to get into the auditorium and get a good seat. There has been more hype and conjecture over the anticipated Apple tablet launch than any product in recent memory, and when Steve Jobs walked onto the stage to talk to the assembled media the energy in the room was palpable.

The iPad, as Apple's tablet will be called, can almost be defined as the missing link — it's not a smart phone, not a computer, but a combination of each. "So much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone," Jobs said.

What's everyone's thoughts on the iPad? I really liked the fact that the lowest model is $499, but I still can't seem to justify even that. Personally don't see what I would use it for.

I'm predicting that it will be a big hit initially then fall off the map.

It's a big feature packed iPod Touch.

It's a small(er) featureless laptop.

If you already have one of each then getting this is just an ego boost IMHO.

Somehow, with all the hype, I can't help think the iPad is just an updated Newton with a color screen.

Anyone under 30 can look that up on Wikipedia.

EXACTLY what I was thinking.
I just dont understand the advantages of getting one, at all. Its just a big iPhone it seems to me. A terrible substitute for a laptop

Totally agreed, and a total waste of money. I would rather buy a BlackBerry Storm over that. Apple should have never entered the phone market. They have made it worse, not better.

I received the email this morning from Apple about the ipad. Unfortunately the price in the UK is still 'tba'. Knowing how things work we will probably be seriously over charged as always.
I think this is a great idea but still very much in it's infancy. May be this is the link to a future product that will be something that is more useful in day to day life.
Whilst portable I still feel the product needs to become 'more' portable to have genuine benefits.
May be with OLED screens coming into it's own now more companies will work towards an all in one hand held system. I think this could be the beginning of a true 'must' have product but not necessarily from Apple.
