This but the latest gimmick on the technology road to try and induce those that must be at the "leading edge" to rush out and buy it. The real event will be when the technology is in commercial use for what is referred to as "cloud" technology. Then watch the commercialization of that as it will be like getting a free pass to the money making machines. Everything will be charged for.truenorth

My suggestion is that rather than view the iPad as something between a laptop and a smartphone, something people have potentially little need for, Apple should position its new device as 'the actual replacement for paper.'

Erm no as that would be the 'Sony reader'. Already done.

The Sony Reader, IMHO, is better.

Names for each grade of the iPad:  Light iPad, Medium iPad, and MaxiPad and if they ever allow tethering.... well, you can guess if I'll ever get any Apple gadgets.

I think tablet PCs are better than any of the other options. Reason? It's a full blown computer plus an e-reader. I've got a Fujitsu Stylistic that I use to browse the web, email, play games, watch movies, and read e-books. If I get tired of using the onscreen keyboard, I can always plug in a keyboard and mouse and prop it up against a book or something. And I can plug in an external dvd player, too.
Of course, I don't get the 1 week battery life that a kindle or sony ereader gets, but I think 4-5 hours is pretty good for the small battery.....

Also the problem with tablets compared to an e-reader such as the Sony Reader or Kindle is they're not using the e-ink technology which makes the text a lot easier to read. Also on many e-readers including the Kindle you can browse the Internet and listen to music, granted the browser experience isn't that great, but it's free over whispernet.

An opinion on the maxi, er, ipad.

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2358684,00.asp

Pretty good review and many of the complaints that overs continue to make. Over the years Dvorak has been pretty good at predicting the future and although he's been wrong in the past he's got a pretty good pulse on technology. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Have you seen their demo video?
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/#video

The video itself makes me want to buy one. Knowing it had no multitasking capability and no flash....... Apple won't get my money yet!

    Interesting videos to check out:

I've always been impressed with Apple's design and their marketing team, and I agree Carbon after watching that video it really is slick looking. Doesn't change my views on it though, still have yet to find any valid application I'd be able to use it for. I'll stick with my laptop. :)
