    Which Browser is the Best?
    « on: February 10, 2010, 04:16:09 AM »
I guess everyone has their own favorite...but is there a browser that's better than Internet Explorer?Or will I just be wasting my time on any others'? I've tried Mozilla Firefox on my old computer and it "seemed" faster, but I couldn't say for sure. Now that I have a new computer(well,it's 2 months old)..I want to go the best route.
Oh,I'm running Windows 7,but I'm not sure about all the other stuff that the first (tacked) post says to put.(sorry)
IE seems OK,but if there is a better one,I'd like to change.
      Thanks

There is no best. Whatever you like is best. Install a few and make your own decision. The most popular are IE8, Firefox, Opera and Safari. I have all 4 installed on most systems but IE8 is my personal choice.

Another one is Google's Chrome, which has been gaining in popularity, according to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp.  They all have some different features.  It's really a matter of personal preference.

I've been using Firefox as my default browser.  I like it's handling of passwords, it's way of saving passwords; also, many add-ons are available for Firefox.  For example, I have ColorfulTabs installed.  With it, my browser tabs are different colors and I have the option to set a certain color for certain websites.

They are all free.  I usually use Firefox, but I've also got IE8, Chrome, Opera, and Safari.

Like it has been stated several times, it's all a matter of personal preference.  Just download several and see which one you like.  Unless, you are really tight on HD space, none of the browsers really take up that much space, and if you just got a new computer, I'm guessing you have plenty of free HD space

You will also find out that some browsers work better on some sites than others.

One advantage of having several browsers, is that if you are having a problem on a particular site, you can try another browser to see if it works better.

I LOVE chrome! It fast, light, and very streamlined. There are no stupid toolbars to slow you down, everything you need is right there and all the fancy extras are hidden in drop down menus and buttons. It is very bare basic but its fast and very clean. Firefox is great too but it takes forever to open and it just feels bulky and slows down the computer. I like things very clean and small and not many gagets on it so chrome suits me. Firefox is great for the extra addons and cool stuff you can do with it, but if you just want to surf the internet with no problems, Chrome is the way to go.

          I use SRWare Iron: http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php
It's basically Google Chrome, except it doesn't have spyware.

EDIT: You can also install all the Google Chrome addons on SRWare Iron.

If you ever watch a show that says absolutely nothing bad about a company then their view is biased. All companies make mistakes, it's how they deal with the repercussions from those mistakes that make or break them as a company.

Has it occured to anybody that perhaps Google struck a deal with NBC? "we'll rank results pointing to you page higher, just do a shameless plug of us".

It's basically Google Chrome, except it doesn't have spyware.

Google removed that "we will monitor your activities for whatever reasons we desire, anything you post using Chrome becomes the property of Google, including forum posts, blog entries, etc " clause from the EULA quite some time ago.... I think they did, anyway. I'm not about to install Chrome to find out.

Maybe give ChromePlus browser a test? It's based on Chromium (the open source version of Chrome) but it has additional features, which seem good like adblocking, IE tab (so you can really throw away IE8) for say.

is the best and that is the best. All I can suggest is that it's like going to buy a car

I've been using Firefox as my default browser.

Over these years, FF has literally turned in to a 'Bloated' browser taking a significant amount of time to load during its 'Cold Boot'!!!

Moreover, these Guys have not yet come up with 'Quick Loader/accelerator' kind of thing that can make it load fast right on the very first instance!

It'll surely be 'Web acceleration' by the means of using 'Compression Technology'.....Remember 'Google Web accelerator'????...That'll be the way forward to step ahead of all future Browser innovations, specially when Google have come with Public DNS>>8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 & have also quoted interest to invest in Multi-million dollars Optic Fiber N/W capable of delivering Internet speeds in the range of Gbps!!

Being that its a new computer,I doubt a whole lot could slow it down(besides worms,trojans,viruses,adaware,et....)

I have FF and Chrome, in addtion to IE, on my laptop running Vista. Merely having them installed is not going to slow down your system.  Of course, if you run multiple browsers at the same time, and let's say you have a lot of sites/tabs open in each browser, you may notice some slowing of your system.

I totally agree with Soybean, having a number of browsers installed on your hard drive will not slow down your system at all.  I've been amazed at a few of the posts that recommend deleting unused programs off the hard drive to speed up the machine.  Except in some rare extreme cases it doesn't make a difference.

You can have all kinds of unnecessary junk on your hard drive, and as long as it's not running, it won't slow down your system.  Although, if it's junk it's best to get rid of it anyway.

Considering a good percentage of programs like to install startups to make their program faster or update them as a service it's not completely inaccurate. You can always disable the startups instead, of course.

I was very impressed with FireFox.  The speed is great and it has many good Ad-ons.
I have always used IE, but I may switch to FireFox.   8)

Well the great news is now.. after the EU butted in. Microsoft now have to advertise these browsers IE, Opera, Firefox, Chrome and Safari as standard in Europe. If you have not already seen it on your browser your probably using one of the others (not IE). This is an attempt to stop Microsoft monopolising the market. I have no links as this is from my memory.. but feel free to look it up.

Although, if it's junk it's best to get rid of it anyway.

save space on your computer for more important things, yes  ;D

Web browsers do not consume a lot of hard drive space, in comparison to many programs installed on computers.  And, in light of huge hard drives now on many computers, hard drive space for multiple browsers is not a signficant issue.

Some users, such as web developers, should definitely have multiple browsers installed and test web pages in different browsers.  Other users may simply want to take a different browser out for a test drive and see how they like it.  And, they may just like occasionally using a browser other than the one they usually use.

Lunascape Browser may be a good browser for the web developer, as it has Trident, Gecko and Webkit all in one software. It's missing out on Opera's engine though.

Web browsers may not consume a lot of hard drive space, but everything you install to your computer all adds up anyway.  :P

But does it also use the various different script engines that each one uses? doubtful.

utter nonsense. When a drive is full, you don't think, "well, golly gee, I better uninstall this 30 MB web browser that I use everyday!", no. In that case it's more likely that games or large data files (music/movies) are going to be scrutinized.

Lunascape browser worked exactly like firefox last time I tried in gecko mode, you can even install firefox addons like the regular firefox.

True, but I think that if you don't use the software, then just uninstall it so you have that space for other things you use more frequently even if it's small. At least, that's what I think.  :P

Opera all the way, perfect browsing and everything. Even when I play an online game which runs through the web browser, And even when im running scans it's still works well. Mozilla Firefox freezes to much and is so overated in my opinion 8). Google chrome is ok has good graphics, but out of all browsers, Opera is the best  8) ;D

IE9 is in the works. Hopefully it goes better than IE8,

IE9 goes for HTML 5, is HTML 5 going to reduce bandwidth usage in addition to CPU processing power for those adobe flash-required video sites?

The Adobe Flash requiring sites will probably need to be redone to support HTML5... Unless there is some sort of built in support for the otherwise proprietary "SWF" format. (I think it's proprietary)

HTML 5, as I'm aware of, is supposedly going to allow playback of videos and such without plugins. That would mean functionality wouldn't change, but then reduced CPU power is great.

Like my mom's old Pentium 750 mHZ P3 with windows 2000 works fine (although maybe a bit slow when compared to current standards) except that when she tries watching videos on the web, a lot of times, the CPU processing spikes to almost 100%.

Also, I read somewhere that said Opera is probably the best browser to use on an outdated PC.  :P

hmm, I don't think the video playback features will be able to work with SWF, since that's a vector format (messy to deal with) flv (youtube, far far more popular overall) will probably work, though.

There are various browser like Google Chrome, Internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox and opera etc. some people like Google Chrome, some people like internet explorer. But I like Mozilla Firefox is the most important of these all. it has better functon which are suitable to my job profile.

Of course it's all personal opinion, but Firefox is the best to me too. I didn't like it in the early days, too different than what I was used to.
But once I gave it a chance, I've found I can't live without the add ons available. It's stable fast and it's said safer, although I never got a virus with IE.

I've tried Opera and Chrome, and I keep coming back to FF for the customization. It's the best to me, but again, up to the individual.

                                          Come on Guys! ;)

We have to admit that FF is becoming 'Bloated' day by day. FF used to be a 'Perfect' choice for many till Google Chrome came to light!

Google Chrome is a 'Skiddy' browser & launches in a blink of an eye.Surfing is smooth!

With FF, it seems that a 'SUMO' wishes to eat (your system resources) a little more till it gets up to do the fight! ;D

                                          No  match against Google's bet.

FF has been open for 5 days and I have 44 tabs open and it's consuming 100MB.

This is rather surprising, actually. I recently trimmed off a few addons... they might have been causing some memory leaks.

It's easy to say a program is bloated but really half the people that say it don't know what they are saying and nary prove the "bloatedness". They have this concept that the "feeling" they get from using the program is some sort of empirical evidence that the application is slower.

In an interesting sidebar: a program can actually take 5 seconds longer to load then another program, and people will think it's blazingly faster.

Program A takes 15 seconds to load. During the time it loads, the cursor is an hourglass/waiting cursor, but there is no other visual indication the application is starting.

Program B takes 20 Seconds to load, but during this time it displays a splash screen with things such as version, a tip, and perhaps a progress bar.

Guess which one wins in a "bloated" contest? the first one is called "bloated" and "slow" and yet it takes 25% longer to start, and oftentimes people might try to start it again, resulting in two instances.

"bloat" for most people is purely a perception. I'm sorry but perceptions differ between different people and no one perception is ever <righter> then any other. If you perceive that Chrome is faster or that firefox is bloated then go right ahead, but bear in mind that your perceptions are not evidence of anything.
