    internet connection problems?
    « on: February 12, 2010, 08:27:58 PM »
I apologize if this has been posted already. I looked but didn't see it.

2 days ago while shutting down it said there were new updates to download, so I shut down for the night and they downloaded. Next day I couldn't connect to internet. After searching for hours on the internet I am thinking it was the Windows Service pack 3. I tried doing things other people have said. I tried deleting it from my add/remove but it isn't in there? I tried downloading the patch thing to fix that problem but it won't let me either? Keeps denying the signature. I have done anti virus scans with AVG...didn't find anything. I called tech support for help and was on the phone for over an hour and they couldn't figure it out either. The little computers in the bottom corner are gone but according to tech after walking me though different things through Run my internet connection is fine. Pages will load but I can't access banking, facebook, hotmail etc. It won't even allow me to do a system restore. When trying that it says " System restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer then run system restore again". Tried that and the same message came up.
My computer is Windows XP. Highspeed connection.
Any help is appreciated. I am fairly good with computers but this is driving me nuts!

      1.  Backup Data.  Suggest you "backup" any data you can't afford to lose to another internal hard drive or "off" the computer (CD, DVD, USB flash drive, USB external drive, network drive).  There's no guarantee the current installation can be saved.  I doubt anyone knows for sure where the problem lies and recovery efforts may make the problem worse.  Save your data while you still have access.

      2.  Uninstall Service Pack 3.  Try again to uninstall the service pack (to see if your problems go away).  See How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer.

You said it isn't in "Add or Remove Programs" window.  Per "Method 1" of the above removal link, "check" the "Show updates" box at the top of the window.  Does it show up now?

If not, I guess you'll need to work through the rest of the listed "Methods".

I checked the updates and there are 10 security updates from windows xp on Feb 10th but no service pack 3. I am going to look into it more then just reformat the computer I guess. I have backed up everything within the last few weeks. Thank you for the advice :)

So I went through safe mode with networking and into the Administrators option and I am now on the internet again....so who knows? I can get into hotmail, banking and facebook again. So it has to do with my settings somwhere???

            1.  Operating System.  What operating system and service pack level are you currently using?

One way to check is:  Start -> right-click My_Computer -> Properties -> General tab -> System subsection.

            2.  Recommendation.  Since it works in Safe Mode with Networking, I'd hold off on the format and reinstall.  Yes, it sounds like a software problem:  malware, security software, and/or configuration settings.  Safe Mode runs with a minimal set of services and drivers.  Although time consuming, one troubleshooting approach is to use the "msconfig" utility to selectively disable (or enable) startup programs and non-Microsoft services until the "bad boys" are discovered.

            Different people use different approaches:
                 a.  Disable all startup programs and non-Microsoft services, then enable one at a time, reboot, and see if problem is gone.
                 b.  Enable all startup programs and non-Microsoft services, then disable one at a time, reboot, and see if problem is gone.
                 c.  Disable all startup and non-Microsoft services of third party security software, reboot, and see if problem is gone.

            You get the picture...

            3.  Msconfig.  May be accessed from either Safe Mode or Normal Mode.  If you disable all startup programs and non-Microsoft services and problem still exists when booted to Normal mode, then we might have to try a "clean" boot.

Following procedures and notes "stolen" from Broni.
            Quote
Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
            msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

            Click on Startup tab.
            Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

            Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
            Click Disable all.

            Click OK.
            Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

              1. Ping.  From a Command Prompt window, see if you can ping the sites you're currently not able to open; e.g. "ping www.computerhope.com".

              2.  "hosts" File.  Open the "hosts" file using a text editior (notepad or wordpad) and see if the sites you're unable to access have been associated with the loopback address "127.0.0.1".  This would prevent access.

File should be in directory "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc".

The little computers in the bottom corner are gone...
              3.  Connection Status Icon.  I think you can restore this by:  Start -> Control_Panel -> double-click Network_Connections -> right-click Local_Area_Connection -> Properties -> General tab -> check the two boxes at the bottom.

              4.  System Restore.  You could boot to "Safe Mode" and attempt system restore to a "restore point" prior to your troubles.  However, a system restore completed within Safe Mode may not be undone.

If you do a system restore, I believe you'll lose all "folders" and "files" stored on your desktop.
