How to enable 32-bit file access in Windows 3.x

To enable 32-bit file access, follow the steps below.

  1. Access the Control Panel from Program Manager.
  2. Double-click the 386 Enhanced icon.
  3. Select Virtual Memory, then click Change.
  4. If the swap file is temporary, choose permanent.
  5. In this screen, optionally enable the 32-bit disk access. If done, ensure you also enable 32-bit file access.
  6. Restart Windows.
