How to fix problems in Windows after installing new software

Updated: 07/13/2023 by Computer Hope

If you experience problems with your Windows operating system after installing new software, the following suggestions may help you fix it.

Reinstall or uninstall the program

Open CD-ROM (compact disc read-only memory) drive tray.

If you are encountering problems with your computer or other programs after installing new software on your computer, uninstall the program and see if the issues persist.

Note

If, after installing a program, you're unable to boot to Windows, try booting to Safe Mode.

After the program is uninstalled, try installing the program again.

Check for program updates or new versions

If you continue to experience issues, check the software manufacturer's website for any patches or updates to the program, game, or utility you are installing.

If you're installing software or drivers for hardware, such as a printer, get the latest software and drivers from the manufacturer website. Do not install the software and drivers on a CD (compact disc) or diskette that came with the hardware, as they are often outdated. See our drivers page for links to different types of hardware drivers.
