Device Manager miscategorizes a device
Verify that you are removing the actual device beneath the category. If you are removing an icon that has a "+", "-", or ">" symbol next to it, you are attempting to remove a category. To remove the category, you must first remove all of the devices beneath it.
If you are positive that the device is being removed, we have encountered this question several times; while we have seen this issue, we have not been able to reproduce it. It is likely caused by a corruption in Windows device drivers of the Windows Registry. Because Microsoft has not documented or acknowledged this issue, try the suggestions below.
- Reboot the computer.
- Remove any similar device. For example, if the device is a Sound device remove all other sound devices from Device Manager. Reboot the computer and let Windows re-detect the sound device.
- Run a Registry cleaner.
- If any new hardware has been recently added to the computer, shut down the computer and remove it to make sure it is not the cause of your problem.
- Finally, if none of the above suggestions help we suggest reinstalling Windows to resolve this issue.
