Power plugs

When traveling to another country, you may need to utilize an adapter or alternate power plug for your computer or laptop to accept power.

What power adapter or converter do I need?

The country you are visiting and the computer you are using affects the power adapter or converter you need.

Many desktop computers and some laptops have a switch that enables the power supply to convert between multiple voltages. For example, a power supply may enable a user to convert between 115V and 230V. If the country you are visiting supports the alternate voltage, you may only need to purchase an adapter that enables you to connect to a different power plug.

If your computer does not support the voltage of the country you are visiting, you must purchase a voltage converter.

Where can I purchase power adapters or voltage converter?

Numerous locations that supply and carry many adapters for your power needs; below are a few examples of where adapters can be purchased.

  1. Local electronics store, such as Radio Shack, often carry a selection of power adapters.
  2. Numerous web pages on the Internet carry a large variety of adapters.
  3. Your computer manufacturer may sell adapters that can be used with your portable computer.
  4. Many airport shops carry power adapters for different countries.

What voltage converter should I purchase?

When purchasing a voltage converter, consider the below recommendations.

  1. Make sure the voltage converts the voltage of your computer to the country you are visiting. For example, if you are from the United States of America, your computer is currently running on 115V-120V and 60Hz. If you are traveling to France, their power system utilizes 230V and 50Hz. A listing of what countries use what power is found through our power supply links page.
  2. Make sure the voltage converter can handle the device it is being plugged into. Some voltage converters are designed for small devices, such as an iron, and are not capable of supporting computers.
