How to create a barcode in Microsoft Word

To create a barcode in Microsoft Word, follow the steps and suggestions on this page for the version of Microsoft Word on your computer.

Note

Creating barcodes is only possible in the Microsoft Word desktop application. You cannot perform this action in Microsoft Word Online (the web version).

Create a mailing barcode for addresses in the United States

Microsoft Word 2007 to Word 365

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Click the Mailings tab in the toolbar.
  3. Click the Envelopes option.
  4. Type the delivery address, if necessary, for the envelope or label.
  5. Click the Options button.
  6. Click the Font button in the delivery address or return address section.
  7. Select the barcode font in the Font list. You need to download and install a valid barcode font to select that barcode font at this step. See the other barcodes section below for general help on finding and downloading a barcode font.
  8. Click OK on the envelope address and envelope options windows.

Microsoft Word 2003 and earlier

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Click Tools.
  3. Click Envelopes and Labels.
  4. Type the delivery address, if necessary, for the envelope or label.
  5. Click the Options button.
  6. Check the box for "Delivery point barcode" and click OK.

Other barcodes

You can also download barcode fonts to create barcodes. Realize that there are different symbologies of barcodes, meaning that not all of them are supported by all readers or other programs.

After downloading and installing a barcode font in Windows, you can select it in Microsoft Word to create a barcode.

There also exist numerous third-party programs that help keep track of barcodes and products that integrate with Microsoft Word.
