How do I view the name or label of a drive?

Updated: 10/30/2017 by Computer Hope

Below are the steps on how you can view the label (name) of a drive on your computer.

Windows users

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. In My Computer each drive listed displays their names before the drive letter. For example, a drive may show as "Local Disk (C:)", "Local Disk" is the name of this drive and C: is the drive letter. Right-click the drive icon and select Properties to display the Properties of the drive including its name. From the drives Properties window you can also change the name of the drive.

Local Disk (C:) in Windows

MS-DOS and Windows command line users

  1. Change to the drive letter to view its label.
  2. Once at the drive, type label and press enter.
