How to deactivate a Facebook account

The Facebook logo.While Facebook is quite popular, sometimes people want to stop using their account for one reason or another. The following process will deactivate your Facebook account, which is convenient as you'll be able to return to Facebook at some point in the future if you choose to do so. To proceed, follow the steps in the section below.

Note: Deactivating your account is not the same thing as deleting your Facebook account. This process only suspends your account and does not erase it permanently.

Warning: Deactivating your account will not protect it from hackers.

Deactivating a Facebook account

  1. Log into Facebook.

  1. On the homepage menu bar, click The triangle that creates the main drop-down menu on Facebook. on the far right side.

  1. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.

  1. Select General from the left column.

  1. Under the Manage Account section, click Edit on the far right side.

  1. Select Deactivate your account.

  1. Enter your Facebook Password.
  2. Select a reason for leaving and click the The Deactivate button on Facebook. button.
  3. Click the The Deactivate Now button on Facebook. button.

Note: If you check the box next to E-mail opt out, you will no longer be visible to friends on Facebook. Furthermore, you will not be able to receive invites, be tagged in photos, or asked to join groups.
