How to access and change computer keyboard settings

Computer users can change some settings and features, including programmable keys or keyboard shortcuts, on a computer keyboard in Windows or macOS. The settings and features can change depending on the type of keyboard.

To access settings for your computer keyboard, follow the steps for the type of operating system on your computer.

Microsoft Windows

To access keyboard settings in Windows, press the Windows key, type Keyboard, and then press Enter.

In the Keyboard Properties window that opens, you can change some basic settings for your keyboard, as shown in the example below.

If you have a multimedia or programmable keyboard, additional settings and features can be changed through software from its manufacturer. This software may come with the peripheral itself, bundled with a computer purchase, or may be downloaded from the keyboard manufacturer's website.

Once installed, keyboard software lets you access and modify additional settings and features. However, the specific functionality adjustments differ based on the software and manufacturer.

Tip

If you have a Microsoft keyboard, you can adjust additional settings through the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center.

Apple macOS

Here is how to access and change computer keyboard settings in the latest versions of macOS.

  1. At the top of the screen, on the far-left side of the menu bar, click the Apple icon.
  2. Select System Settings from the Apple menu.

  1. In the sidebar, near the bottom, select Keyboard. The top section lets you change some basic settings like key repeat rate, and edit keyboard shortcuts.

  1. The lower sections allow you to change text input souces and dictation settings. You can also edit your keyboard's type and setup.
