How to connect a headset to an Xbox One

Updated: 11/13/2018 by Computer Hope

To hear your games more clearly, or chat with friends and teammates, a headset is a great way to do so. Below are details on how to connect your headset to your controller and troubleshoot any errors you may encounter.

What ports does your controller have?

If you purchased an Xbox One controller that was made after June 2015, it includes a 3.5-mm headphone jack. This connector makes the controller compatible with more headset options. If you don't have this option, you need an adapter to use a headset.

There are two ways to connect your headset: a 3.5-mm headphone jack, or the Xbox One headset adapter. If you are using the 3.5-mm headphone jack, plug the headphones into the appropriate port. If you are using an Xbox One headset adapter, plug the adapter into the controller, then plug your 3.5-mm headphones into the adapter.

Troubleshooting errors involving your headset

If you cannot hear anything out of your headset:

  • Check that the headset is connected correctly to the controller.
  • Make sure the volume is turned up on any physical controls on your headset cable or adapter.
  • Go to the quick settings menu by pressing the Xbox button, and navigate to the section to the far right. Turn up the slider titled Headset Volume.

If your voice is not heard by your party members:

  • Check that switch on your headset cable is not set to mute.
  • Make sure the Headset Mic option is turned on in the Quick Settings menu.
  • Turn up the slider titled Mic Monitoring in the Quick Settings menu.
  • Make sure your profile settings allow voice chat with online players.
