How to open photos in Adobe Photoshop

There are two primary methods for opening images in Adobe Photoshop. You can open the file on its own for editing, or you can open a file to include as a layer in an image you already have open. To learn how to perform either of these actions, choose the appropriate section below and follow the instructions.

Editing an image by itself

To use the image with its existing dimensions, follow the steps below.

  1. Select File from the menu bar.
  2. Select Open.
  3. Locate and select the file from File Explorer or Finder.
  4. Select Open.

Adding an image to an existing project

To add a new image to your existing project in the form of a layer, follow the steps below.

  1. Make sure your project is open.
  2. Select File from the menu bar.
  3. Select Place Embedded.
  4. Locate and select the file from File Explorer or Finder.
  5. Select Open.
  6. Press the Enter key to rasterize the image, creating a layer in your project.
