How to change the YouTube language settings

With YouTube video language settings, there are a few options. You can either change the default YouTube website language, or you can change the language of your video uploads. To proceed, select the option you're looking for below, and follow the steps to change the settings.

Change the YouTube website language

This section shows you how to change the default language of your YouTube channel.

  1. On the YouTube home screen, click your YouTube channel picture (A).
  2. About halfway down, click Language (B).
  3. Click your preferred language.

Tip

By default, YouTube videos are displayed in the language of the user who uploaded them. You cannot change the language of the YouTube videos that others have uploaded.

  1. On the YouTube home screen, click Create (A).
  2. Click Upload video (B).

  1. Select the video you want to upload from your computer.
  2. Scroll down and click More options.
  3. Scroll down, and under Language, subtitles, and closed captions(CC), click the down arrow next to Video language.

  1. Click your preferred language.
  2. Finish the other steps necessary for uploading the video, then click Next.
  3. Once finished, click upload.

Editing the language on a video you uploaded

If you made a mistake when you first uploaded a video, you could also change the language by editing it.

  1. On the YouTube home screen, click your channel picture (A).
  2. Click Your channel (B).

  1. Click Videos, then click the video you want to edit.

  1. Pause the video if it starts playing. Under the video screen, click Edit video.

  1. On the Video details screen, scroll down and click Show more.

  1. Scroll down, and under Language, subtitles, and closed captions(CC), click the down arrow next to Video language.

  1. Choose the language you prefer.
  2. Once you're satisfied with the changes, click Save at the top of the screen.
