Short for audio codec '97, AC'97 is an Intel audio component integrated into chipsets, sound cards, motherboards, and modems. This technology was introduced in 1997, and later replaced by Intel HD Audio in 2004.

AC'97 features

AC'97 utilized 16 or 20-bit audio architecture and supported 96 kHz sampling at 20-bit stereo resolution for recording and playback. It also provided support for 5.1 surround sound on desktop and laptop computers.
