An agent may refer to any of the following:

1. A software program or script used to perform a task for the user. For example, an e-mail program, such as Microsoft Outlook, could be considered a software agent since it can be set up to look for any new e-mail from a server and then tell you about it.

2. In computer networking, an agent is a part of the system that prepares data for the server or client.
